Honda Dealer Incompetence - Watch Out
Some background info:
I've owned my 5th gen for about three years and never had any problems with oil consumption or burning. One day I'm driving home, take a corner hard, and my check engine light comes on. Finish the corner and it blinks off immediately. I thought that was odd, so first thing I do is check the fluids. Pull up the dipstick, wipe it, pull it out and it's bone dry. Not a drop of oil on it anywhere. Anyway, it took 3+ quarts to bring it back up to normal.
I'm kinda worried at this point and drop it off at the Honda dealer to inspect. Their mechanics check it out and tell me they can't find any oil leaking out anywhere. I told the guy, there's no fucking way my car lost 3 quarts of oil since my last oil change 1000 miles ago. He tells me, "Oh its normal to consume that much oil." I said, "I don't think so." From then on, I've been checking every time I fill up with gas.
Update: I did some research online and found Honda's technical service bulletins. According to bulletin 00-073 "A CONDITION MAY EXIST WHERE THE FRONT BALANCER SHAFT OIL SEAL MAY BACK OUT OF THE OIL PUMP HOUSING OVER TIME. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE OIL CAN BE RAPIDLY PUMPED OUT OF THE ENGINE WITHOUT WARNING CAUSING SERIOUS ENGINE DAMAGE IF CONTINUED TO RUN."
Thanks Honda for catching that one.. assholes.
