I once had the similar issues with my Mazda 626. The over-heating problem just won't go away. In addition to what you described, I also had problems with cracked/burnt gasket. This was causing the oil and water to mix up raising the engine temperature. It was really frustrating and had become a money pit.

I think once an engine overheats it is never the same again.
