First you need to understand what it all means
The first number is the cold weight "5"w30. The second number is the hot weight. Then you have to understand why they could be different for different engines. The reason is the engine clearences determine which oil to use. If your manual says 5w30, its because the people who engineered it know that the clearences require 5w30 oil.
Now if you're burning oil, at start up for example, you might want to try 10w30 oil, since its thicker cold than 5w30. If you're burning oil at high rpms, then you might want to try 5w50. But if you're not burning any oil, then stick with the recommended weight.
And then theres the whole conspiracy theory with 5w20 oil, which they are now using in most honda engines. This is the "super efficient oil" that has a lower weight when hot, hence less oil drag. But at what cost? Thats still being debated. Tests have shown that 5w20 wears your engine bearings faster since it provides less protection as a consequence of the increased efficiency. Did honda make the engine clearences different to compensate? Or should you really be using 5w30 when it says 5w20...
