As far as people driving SUV's.... Some people do have families that they need to cart around, and others like SUVs for their size and "safety" as far as how it'll hold up in crash vs some small can opener. To each their own.
this was actually studied in depth by aaa...

apparently, it's not how big an suv is... it's how the car overall is engineered... and those big suvs are not very good at absorbing impacts of crashes compared to some well designed smaller cars... a smart was in an accident with a friggin box truck and the driver simply got out uninjured... though that may not always be the case...

the problem is perception...

i want to have a jdm van (mazda5/premacy, or odyssee, stream)...
4 cylinders, relatively lightweight, absolutely fun to drive and able to carry a whole bunch of stuff and 4 people very comfortably, assuming they are average asian sized, which my family is...

but according to perception here, i'd be thought of as a soccer mom...
???

if anything, it looks more foolish driving around in a hummer/escalade/expedition/etc... on 24" blinga blings, having to come to a complete stop to navigate a tiny speedbump, and alone with only a latte and talking on a cell phone wearing those ridiculously large sunglasses that seem to be in vogue nowadays...
