It takes a long time...I had that same filter and it takes a really long time..like stated above you can get away with rinsing them for a long time. The only down side with that is that carbon breaks down and sisnt as effective over time..and liek he said, rinsing with sink water isnt what you want to do because there is chlorine and ammonia in tap water that kills the baceria built up on the filter. But honestly, if you do one at a time and you tank is healthy, you can rinse them int he sink with no adverse effects. And you onyl want to change them out when they become so clogged you cant rinse it out, but I would say twice a year you should replace the filter because of the carbon. Int he penguin 300 you have the two filters. Shange/clean them seperately, give it about a week or two between cleanings to help with the bio load
