Honda Newb: 94 GS-R JRSC Build

Alright, so a friend of mine and I are planning to boost his 94 GS-R. He's coming from a 530+rwhp procharged camaro and is looking for something to have fun in up here and the mountains and have a little kick in the straights. Car may see some auto-x and MAYBE a track day if I can talk him into it.

Because of cost and drivability issues, we think we've decided on the Jackson Racing Supercharger...the big boost kit along with full bolt-ons. Kit is 12 Psi...hondata retuned ecu, s300 I beleive...440 injectors...

http://www.supercharger.com/Shop/Vie...eIndexID=38961

The car, to my knowledge will be bone stock (hasn't picked it up yet) mechanically, I know we'll be doing suspension/brake work on it first. What all is recommended from those are you who have JRSCs? Is the big boost kit the way to go for decent power goals and QUICK low end power?

-Also, the kit doesn't look intercooled...what intercooler kits are available for this kit, or does it need to be custom made? I've never boosted a honda...but I know I'd never F/I my miata w/ out some kind of cooling, is it needed or just highly recommended?.

But what else is recommended: what fuel pump would be needed/suggested? (I've heard Walbro 225, the HP or regular), what header/catback/intake combo, any advice at all?

Also, I think the est. # should be around 250 hp...what clutch would be recommended...and is a LSD necessary? sorry, not sure if the GS-R came factory with one?

We are building a street car w/ maybe some auto-x's...track day time...but mostly very hard mountain driving and some 1/8th mile stuff every once in a while, any help would be much appreciated...just link me to threads if you think they could be usefully, theres a couple of LS builds, and a bunch of JRSC post, but I wanted to post up anyway, even though I've read most of them too. I'll keep the thread updated w/ installs etc, just trying to get a start...Thanks guys!

The Plan: |Updated|
JRSC - Used?
Walbro 225
Larger Injectors - unsure
wheel/tire combo - unsure
LHT <--expensive! IC setup.
JDM ITR LSD

to long of a post...been reading the other post and this site is awesome...guess I should ask with a cliff note:
  • LSD needed?
  • Wheel/tire combo need to keep decent traction w/ 250 whp
  • suspension upgrades needed to control power and corner decently- on a budget
  • intercooler options
  • intake/exhaust saw that two headers come highly recomended on a post.
  • upgrades/guages/little stuff etc?

LSD is nice. If you are autocrossing you'll need it with the blower.
LHT intercoolers are available for the JRSC.

You may find this site of use:http://www.ftlracing.com/tech/honda/jrsc_pulley.html

Most your questions can be answered if you read the FAQ stiky at the top.

If you are sure on running the high boost kit, I'd make sure to at least get 550cc injectors or maybe a tad bit larger. I have seen close to max duty cycle from 440cc and 450cc injectors toward redline on the B18c engine setups with the lower psi setups.

But take your time and read as much as possible. If money permits, get the LHT IC setup.

Your cat delete would really depend on your location for legal issues.

Get an LSD...you WILL need it IMO. I light up both tires just going through intersections sometimes.

the LHT setup...found that one right after I posted...about a grand right? is that the only IC choice?

I posted this up on another forum and the consensus seems to be that for the money, a low boost/quick spool turbo might be the easier/cheaper solution...would you guys agree...b/c it seems to me that getting to 250 things start to add up especially if you add in the IC.

Thanks for the answers on the LSD, I figured it would be needed, but just wanted to see what ya'll thought.

A small turbo would work too, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a turbo that spools by 2000 rpm and supports 250whp. You would also loose the instant throttle response of the blower.

The blower is cheaper if you pick up a used one (~$1000). So for about $2500 use can piece together a setup with a LHT intercooler. I wouldn't run 12 psi without the intercooler. Probably no higher than 8 or 9 without unless you are someplace were the weather NEVER gets hot.

The 440 injectos will work fine if you raise the fuel pressure to about 60psi. I'm running DSM 450cc @ 65 psi on my setup and duty cycle is ~80%. At that fuel pressure they are equivalent to 580cc injectors. If you haven't purcashed the injectors yet do as female four has suggested, larger injectors are never a bad idea. I'd probably go as high as 750s.

Hmmm, I know he was looking at the big boost setup...came w/ the 440s...and I think s300 comptech piggyback...

if we just bought the blower separate, got bigger injectors and the LHT intercooler setup, 255 Fuel Pump, what else would we need to get 250? is the only route the JR upgrades or can you do everything else separate and just buy pulleys from them?

EDIT: Nothing has been purchased yet, just going to plan the setup, then go for all the parts...

Buy a used blower, LHT intercooler, injectors, and a hondata or crome setup.

My JRSC recommendations: http://www.ftlracing.com/tech/honda/JRSC.html

hehe..just kinda lays everything out...

thanks.

which hondata setup is the best bang for the buck in your opinion? is the s300 a pretty decent piggyback?

How big of a tire are we talking about to get decent traction on the street...running like a Azenis 615 or a Kook RS-2. <---or a slightly less stick street tire.

Neither will hook up; I have the RS2s and they spin in 2nd. Not to 2nd, but in 2nd. ie: cruising in 2nd gear and just stepping on it causes it to loose traction...

So get the RT-615 in the biggest size that will fit. I purchased the RS2 when the 615s were out of stock...

I use crome, but if I used Hondata I'd go with a S300 its slick.

205-45-16.

I'd suggest running 215-45-16 in the RT615s if you can. I reget not doing so.

the s300 is not a piggy back. it is a chip with a USB adapter so you can update it with a laptop in realtime. next best thing is AEM EMS standalone.

I didn't like the 215.45.16 Azenis on the GSR. Too tig, wide I mean. Too much wondering and torque steer. Thats just personal opinion though.
