No0b Question . . . .

yeah um . . . . i don't know too much about superchargers but i am very interested in adding more POWER to my civic. do superchargers tear your engine up like a turbo if you use it as a daily driver? and what kinds of upgraded parts would i need to get to make sure my engine doesn't get too tore up? what kind of power could you expect from a supercharger? o and just one more . . . . what do you think is best overall . . . . SUPERCHARGER or TURBO???

thanks
scott g

i suggest going to your bookstore's automotive section and find a book on supercharging, it should tell you everything u need to know and more. and BTW, turbos dont tear up your engine, dumb ass owners do. as long as the engine is built to handle however amount of boost u throw at it, it will be ok. but a stock engine will be fine w/ a turbo pushing about 5 psi. just do some research.

Geez guys, help a brother out!
Turbos and Superchargers have similar wear and tear affects on your engine based on boost levels. Most blocks can handle 6lbs of boost and still be reliable and retain longevity. With 6lbs of boost in a 1.6L you can exptect to see about a 40% increase in maximum horsepower. You will also see increases in torque.
As far as which is better - T or SC - it's up to the owner. Turbos have a lag period, superchargers are always adding load to the crank. I would reccomend a Turbo for a low compression engine (like a D-series or a b18b) and a Supercharger for a high output engine (like the DOHC B series engines). This is the way people tend to go, if for no other reason, because that's how products are available. I've never seen a S/C for a D-series engine. Turbos and S/Cs abound for B16s and B18Cs
Anyway, a good starting point is a 6lbs system. This will let you run stock internals and focus on getting the fuel management fine tuned.
Jackson Racing makes a super efficient supercharger
Fmax and Greddy are premier Turbo companies.

If and when you decide to run higher boost you will need to upgrade your connecting rods, pistons, maybe a new sleeve, cams, ignition, fuel pump and management, clutch, and much more. It's a project.
Hope this helps. I'm sure somebody who actually has a Turbo'd or Supercharged car could help you out more. This is just what I've learned over the years

They make superchargers for D series engines. Just look at all of them on the JR website. I've got one.

And another thing, SCs typically flow less CFMs than turbos, so they may be good for 8, 10, even 13 PSI on a stock block and head. Turbos typically aren't pushed over 7 PSI on a stock block because anything more will typically blow the engine within a small amount of time.
