my wife has decided to go with pentax over canon cause she already has lenses for the pentax and she doesnt want me to spend the money to get new lenses (if i got her the 20d)
so...
does anyone know the difference between the *ist ds2 and the *ist dl?
i looked both of them up on bhphotovideo.com and compaired them and it seems that the only difference would be the flash (dl has built in flash). oh and the price is a bit different... $100 difference... both being bodies only

The DS2 has a pentaprism viewfinder, and the DL uses a pentamirror (like most sub $1000 DSLRs). Understand that the prism viewfinder is an important component to a DSLR because it is significantly brighter and larger than pentamirror viewfinders.
Like the DS, the DS2 also has 11 autofocus points to choose from in your viewfinder, and the DS2 has Continuous autofocus available in all shooting modes.
Compare and contrast the DS2 and the DL. You'll find that they are both a pleasure to use with older autofocus and manual lenses. Which lenses does your wife have?
edit: Oh and the DS2 has P-TTL flash compatibility, and the DL does not. However, both units are compatible with nearly any external flash unit, and certain units such as the Sigma EF 500 SUPER DG and the Pentax AF360FGZ and AF540FGZ allow high speed flash sync up to 1/4000 sec shutter speeds.

Very nice.
I also forgot to mention that unlike some other DSLRs, Pentax has an autofocus indicator for older manual lenses. It's a mechanism that beeps once the subject is in focus, and you can set it as a focus trap so that it takes the picture as soon as focus is achieved by holding down the shutter, hence any older Kmount lens can be used as a semi-autofocus lens.
I suggest looking into other prime lenses because primes are much sharper than zoom lenses since they "specialize" in a specific focal distance. However, there are many good zooms that deliver sharpness similar to primes.
I have several primes: 16mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 100mm, 135mm, 200mm, and 400mm... and a couple zooms: 70-300mm
