For about 3 years I tried to teach myself on photography. I read many books on the basics like the aperture and shutter in the camera. I fully understand the difference between the two and know how they effect each other. I also spend countless hours online reading about it and trying to study the pictures from other well known photographer.

Last semester I took a class at my local community college on the basics of photography. The technical stuff that he was teaching I already know like the aperture, shutter, focal distance, and light balance. Even though I knew everything that he was teaching there was one thing missing. Besides just teaching me the technical details about photography he was teaching me some tricks and style of photography that I don't think I would learn from just reading. A good teacher will add his/her personal touch when he/she teach. That one semester that I was in class I learned a lot more than what I learned from reading the books.

Now I am not saying that you shouldn't try to teach yourself. I think you should try and teach yourself at least the basics and try to take a class on it. When you know a little bit about it, it makes the class a lot easier. Its funny because some people in the class had a lot of trouble understanding some of the basics. Some never even owned a camera before until they took the class.

So my advice is to try and learn yourself and try to find a GOOD teacher.

in addition to taking classes in school .. u could also check out if there are any workshops that deals with certain aspect of photography that you an attend. some are one day, two days, etc ... most workshop will have alot of hands-on stuff for you to learn as well as processing the pics you took that day at the end of the workshop.

Thanks guys, I'll keep those inputs in mind.

That what i was planing to do, get a camera and learn from there myself, then take the class. I dont want a career out of this, just a hobby b/c I love art and all so yeah..

and is this what you guys do as a hobby? or some of you are really making a profession out of this?

It's all about reading books on how to do correct exposures and compositions.

And experience.

Get ready to get flamed by faggots who don't know shit and those who claim are pros too
