man my buddy works at a body shop and has done it to his truck and a couple of my friends cars. all you have to do is get some clear-coat and mix the desired amount of black with it. looks pretty sweet! the cops have never said anything about it, and you can see the brake lights just fine!
there's a film you can get, a paint you can apply, or i think the covers that you're talking about. i wouldn't suggest the covers. the paint is alrite but i have heard that you will need to do a few coats, wet sand and apply clear coat to make it look some what decent. the film is your best bet i think, but i believe it is somewhat expensive. there are many applications and colors. i can't remember the companies that make it.
