The Japanese Mag-X magazine has shown an up date of the supposed-to-be shape of the next (japanese and european) Accord.
It is certainly more attractive and modern than the one shown earlier by Mag-X earlier (see below), although less sleek than the one shown by European magazines.
The American-Accord, by the way, will be larger and will probably more conservatively styled than either of these models. Like the current model, the American version will probably be the basis for the Accords to be produced in Asia (China and Thailand).
Engines will be i-VTEC with 2 and 2.4L displacements (Europe, Asia and America) and 3.2L V6 for North America and Asia. The advanced 2.2L Turbo-Diesel is destined for Europe only (and probably for the CR-V to be sold in Europe too).
Entry model for Europe will probably be equipped with the 1.8L engine from the current generation.
2003 EURO ACCORD
While Toyota already unveiled their new Camry and Nissan the new Altima (in America) and Primera (in Europe), Honda's current Accord will still have at least 1 year to go.
Not that the current Accord will be comparatively outdated by the competitor's new models, as proven by the recent comparo by Car and Driver, where the Accord was chosen the best family sedan over the new Camry and Altima.
In Japan and North America, the new generation Accord will be introduced next fall, while the new "Euro Accord" will probably be introduced somewhat later. The Euro Accord will by the way be built in Japan, as Honda will concentrate the production of only Civic-based cars in its European Plant at Swindon (i.e. Civic 3 and 5-door hatchback and CR-V) both for the european market and for export to USA and Japan (3-door Civic, incl. Si and Type R and CR-V).
There are already a number of renderings of the new Accord.
The more progressive one (left) was taken from the German magazine Auto, Motor und Sport (AMS) while the quite conservative one from Japan's MagX.
It is probable, that Honda will produce different Accord models (despite producing these models in Japan) for Europe and Japan.
The one shown by MagX is probably intended for the (conservative) Japanese market. This model is much too conservative (even hopelessly outdated) for the European taste that it would not succeed to boost the popularity of the Accords in Europe. The model shown by AMS, on the other hand, looks quite bold and can stand the comparison with popular middle class (sports) sedan like the Audi A4 , the Renault Laguna and others (incl. Nissan's new, progressive Primera).
Hopefully, AMS is right about the shape of the new Euro Accord.
North America will, like the current Accord generation, get american designed Accords (sedan and coupe), which will be larger than both the Japan and Euro Accord.
Basically, the Accords will get variations of the famous i-VTEC engine with 2L (Japan and Europe) and 2.4L (North America).
European basic models will probably also get the 1.8L engine of the current generation (136 PS). The 2L i-VTEC should deliver between 150 and 160 PS while the 2.4L versions for North America will probably get around 160 to 170 HP. American versions will also get a V6 engine, probably a 3.2L with around 225 HP.
To boost the popularity of the Accords in Europe, a diesel version will be available, sporting Honda's new, advanced common rail turbo diesel engine with a displacement of 2.2L and an output of 140 HP. This diesel engine seems to match the best diesel engines of the European competitors in terms of power output, fuel economy and refinement. Also in the pipeline for Europe and Japan is the Type "R" version with a highly tuned 2 or 2.4L i-VTEC engine with an output of at least 220 HP (the current Accord Type "R" has 212 HP 2.2L VTEC engine).
By the way, the small picture on the left shows a Civic based sport coupe with a smaller and lighter body (CRX??), intended for those who consider the highly rated Civic Type "R" as too big. This is just a speculation however and might not ever be produced
