About 6 months ago I put a new t-stat in my 95 Honda Accord. When I'm giving the car gas the temp guage is right around the middle line or slightly higher (probably because I put a higher temp t-stat in it). However, when I'm coasting or come to a stop at a red light the temp guage goes all the way up, sometimes to the red if I'm sitting for long enough (usually not more than 30 second or so). However, when I accelerate the temp goes right back down to the mid-line. I don't have any overheating issue when driving on the highway, even for over an hour at 60+ mph. The car doesn't show signs of overheating (choking, smoking, poor performance) when the temp guage goes up into the red.
I let the car heat up to the red one time when parked, then put it in neutral and gave it some gas. Again, the temp guage went right back down, this time below the mid-line, probably because I gave it more gas in neutral than I would when accelerating normally.
The fans are running from a few minutes after the car is turned on until even after the car is shut off. I ran the test above to make sure that the temp would go down without cool air coming in when driving. Unless the t-stat is completely shot, I'm thinking there is an issue with the water pump, because the t-stat has been in for about 6 months without any issues until recently.
Any thoughts, comments, suggestions would be appreciated.
Mods: intake, cat, muffler, and now waiting on suspension! =D
what about bleeding the fluids and refilling.. cause i had this problem as well and all i did honestly was bled the antifreeze and changed my upper radiator hose and then refilled both the radiator itself and the overflow valve.. never had a problem since man
I'll give it a try... probably not until this weekend so I'll update when I give it a shot. I added some coolant tonight to see if that would help at all, but will try to bleed it out.
I added some coolant/water last night and the car ran at a much lower temp. It was at about 35% rather than 60% up on the temp guage. It did still rise up to the red when I stopped, but the needle went up much slower and obviously took longer since the car was cooler when I came to a stop.
I'll check the level later today and add more coolant/water if needed. This is a good start...
other than the bubbles, check your hoses, clamps, radiator, water pump and timing belt.
Also according to the NHTSA:
Quote:
1995-97 except DC and V6 models: Improperly routed wire harness for factory-installed air conditioner can allow wires to rub against each other, which can eventually cause short circuit that may lead to overheating, smoke, and possible fire.
so this is a known problem to honda and you may be able to get the work done for free under the recall notice if that is, in fact, the issue.
MAKE sure you open the bleeder bolt to let any air out. also, even if your fans are turning, they may be slow...they should be able to be heard....mine were turning but barely..... had to replace both and now i am fine. my car was doing the same thing....
