backlight on my odometer has gone out, need help

Hello everyone. Haven't posted up in a while. I'm finally back in the family. My 2000 Civic was stolen in 2003 and was away from Hondas for a while. Anyway, I now have a 2001 Honda Accord Sedan LX and the backlight on the odometer is no longer working. I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this issue. Is there a fuse or something I need to replace. I don't have the Chilton's for this car yet so hopign someone out there can share some knowldege. Thanks.

Wil

Very common. There is a bulb located behind the odometer that you can replace. The bulb is less than $5 from the dealership and it should take you about 30 minutes to replace even if you have never done it before. I can do them in about 10 minutes. Two screws hold the trim around the gauge bezzle and 4 screws hold the gauge cluster in the dash.

It takes like 2 minutes to change. Had to do it twice in my maxima.

ok, so i bought the bulb and i took the cluster apart. Real easy as you stated. I started to replace it when i realized the dealership sold me the wrong one. Its a bit larger then the one thats in there now so i have to go back and get the right one. In addition, now my D4 light went out. P, R, N, D3, 2, and 1 all work fine, but D4 doesn't. Any idea why this would have happened. I went back in there after having re-assembled the gauge cluster and made sure everhthing was tight.

and last question, the P,R,N,D4,D3,2,and1 shift sybmols are on the right side of the console but on the back of the gauge cluster it seems that all the bulbs are on the left side. How do I know which one to change for my D4 if that indeed is the issue.

I asked dealership how much to diagnose and they said $90 per hour so I'm gonna try to do this myself. Thanks in advance.

P.S. - Anyone have the maintenance manual in a PDF that they can share?

ok, in case anyone runs into this problem, know that the actual gear indicators in your cluster each have their own bulb. I took the whole cluster apart and behind the circuit board there are these tiny (special order from dealership) bulbs, one for P, R, N, D4, D3, 2 and 1.

Hope this helps someone out in the future.
