I have a 4th gen... it idles really low. accordign to the tach it looks like 600 almost 550. but those tachs aren't really as accurate as they can be. i would recommend checkign ur idel rpm by actually testing it with an accurate tach. and if it idles any less than 500 or 450 then that's ur problem... u can fix it by adjusting the screw on the throttle control. u know under the hood with the thing with the spring. its hard to reach atleast on the 4th gens. but if u often let go off the gas really quickly then the throttle comes and rests against that screw so over time and repeated quick letting off the gas can cause the screw to be pushed back a little so u can fix it by just tightening it. that's how i fixed my super low idling a while back.

what do you mean rough? rough as meaning tat it is like a massage when you sit in the car? that rough? well, try to readjust your distributor coil. it might smooth everything out. the timing might be a little bit off. jus check the coil

Yeah, when the weather is cold the engine will idle at a much higher RPM as high as 2000 sometime. Its for emission reasons. so the best time to check the idle RPM is to wait till the engine is sufficiently warmed up. Wait till the temp indicator is right in between C and H. having a manual or an auto shouldn't make a difference.
