Personally..I like the HPI kits...they are fairly popular..easy to find...easy to get parts for, simple kits to put together, and its easy to get help if you need it.
What you want to look for in a nitro kit...since you dont want to spend much..is a RTR kit....or a kit that comes with most of the crap you need..You get a decent radio and the car for a decent price. You want to find a manufacturer that has a pretty good following. That leads you to easy to find parts and hop ups, technical advice thats easy to get, etc.
I statered out with nitro with an hpi kit and I like it a lot. I also looked at the associated rc10gt..btu i wanted an on road. I know a lot of people the the associated kits so I know they are a pretty good manufacturer..and parts are fairly easy to get.
When you get the kit..heres the things you will need to get witht he kit or seperate. Most of the time kits come with jsut the car and motor..some of the more advanced kits dont come with a motor at all...The RTR kits usually come with a radio and actually wont require much building..they are like 97% completely built. YOu will need nitro fuel..make sure you get fuel for nitro cars and not nitro planes..Theres a thread about fuels that people use hyper .21 in an Ofna 9.5 You will need a glow plug igniter..There are a bucnh of different types and they all do the same thing...some have a meter which shows how much juice is left..Fuel bottle..these are like 6 bucks and it just makes putting fuel in the tank easier then trying to pour out of a 1 gallon can. Right away..invest in a better air filter..like the motor saver filter...I'll see if I can find pictures of it for you. I thinkt hats all you will need to get started...JUst as kind of a little thing..get yoruself a fishing tackle box and go buy some cheap tools..like screw drivers, needle nose pliers..jsut little shit..makes it easy so if you need something you have it right there..and there are a bunch of slots to put small parts in..
Heres HPI"s website...You can check out all their kits and parts they offer

^^^ he's right, HPI does make some good stuff, and you definetly wanna go RTR if this is your first one (but I was too lazy to read the post so I don't know) and anyways get a stadium truck, they'll still nail 50-60 mph (nitros) but they can take huge jumps yet tear up some asphalt. The monster trucks are uber fun too, but they aren't as fast (though they can be) as the stadium trucks. I personally like to have a road car and a stadium truck, but money isn't helping in this situation at this time, but anyways show us some pix when you end up with a nitro car/truck. :clap

If you want a buggy. Exactly like mine you have either mine or associated to choose from. The team losi in my opinion is better.
Mine isnt 4wd though and its electric. You can get team losi xxx-nt truck. Which is basically like my car just more adapt to larger bumps and has a nitro engine.
Those things scream. I think theres a video of it maybe on superhonda.

there are some pretty nice hobby stores around calgary, illl drive around and talk to some people, but stadium trucks sound pretty much like what im looking for :clap .
if my eyes get too big i might sucker my brother into a joint venture
thanks doods

mike that vid is sick! :eek i keep forgetting 60mph=100kph haha
what about trannys? are most 1 speed? shoudl i worry about what the gear is made of? (ie. plastic, etc)
motors as well.... they should all come with sufficient power i assume
im sure generally most kits will come with decent parts and i can build up from there.

Yeah those are pretty much the best for stadium trucks. HPI Has the mt2 w/ a few forms of it. But the only mt2 really worth getting is the .18SS version. Which isnt RTR. I believe thats 4wd and im not sure what it would compete with.

that the one mike? it looks pretty wicked, it has metal cut gears too which would probably be better than plastic ones.
what kind of price range would i be looking at for that guy?
oh yea, and what exactly does an RTR kit mean?

RTR means Ready to Run.
Theres a few ways that kits come.
RTR. Assembled and almost ready to go. Normally just includes gluing on tires , painting and trimming body how you want. Gas , Glow Igniter and whatever else they normally list youll need.
Unassembled / and nothing else extra.
Unassembled and an engine and sometimes pipe combos for you.
RTR kits have everything
The build it yourself / unassembled kits generally have higher quality stuff and you can put together your own equip that you like, along with engine and that sort of thing. This is for people who are more into it and normally they already have the equip and they move from vehicle to vehicle. So it costs drop after your initial investments.
I mean if I had to do it again. I would force myself to have saved a bit more and got the unassembled kits. Youll know your kit in and out. Which is good.
Get a better motor and radio. Cause RTR youll always be upgrading and its like your paying for something twice and the shitty thing. The RTR equip youll probably never use again and RTR equip is all over the place being sold. So its not like youll get good dollar for your used , lower performance and widely available used motors and servos and transmitters.
But I got the RTR and I think the good thing is, your into it quicker. You dont have to worry about getting things right, you can see how things are and take them apart slowly and put them back together until your comfortable with working on RC's.
They normally are more and more familiar and use a lot of the same stuff across the board. So once you learn one type and maybe another youll have a good range of how things usually go and its not so foreign looking when you look at your vehicle.
--
But yeah RTR kits are going to be like 300-400 dollars to get going. While itll be like maybe 500-700 for a build it yourself setup with better equip.
In the long run the build it yourself will be better. Cause youll end up doing is this. 400 dollars and your rtr is going then you want more....
You drop 150 on a motor , get a new radio 150 and gosh while your at it, lets improve the steering servo 60 for that new radio. There goes another 360 right there bringing the total to 760. And thats just the simple basics. Then your going to be like. Oh gotta get this cf thing, gotta get the upgrade shocks and better arms or whatever you have available and your into the 1000's.
The only thing thats diff, is its not going to be all at once. Where as the 500-800 build it yourself will pretty much need to be bought al at once. But you can do it one at a time. You just wont be drivable until then.
But here are places to get stuff from
horizonhobbies.com - only place that has losi
towerhobbies.com - good for a lot of stuff and parts , easy to use
ultimatehobbies.com - good pricing on kits
rcmart.com - lots of stuff different pricing all around , lots of option parts

I completely forgot about buggies, they're basically about the same as the stadium trucks, weird I forgot to mention those seeings that I have one, haha. The HPI MT2 18SS seems to be a pretty good truck. If you've never had a high powered nitro or electric car before, you might want to start with a 4wd car. They're much much easier to control. If you think about it, these suckers do 0-100 kph in a few seconds... and since they're 1/10th scale, that means it would be equivilant to a real car doing 0-1,000 kph in three seconds.... can you imagine keeping a car under control that has the power to get the car up to 1,000 kph in just a few seconds??? RWD is a little more fun at times though once you get the feel of things. The good thing is, you can pull out the front drive shafts on your 4wd truck/car to make it a rwd car if you want. To give you an idea though, my nitro 4tec (all I have is a tuned pipe, and the next shorter gears from stock) and I can spin all four tires from a dead stop. It even leaves some cute "mini" black marks on some surfaces, but anyways when I convert it to RWD the rear tires basically spin like crazy and it's impossible to keep in control... but I guess the choice would be up to you. The 4wd nitros seem to go through grass alot better too, because my first nitro was a Traxxas Nitro Sport (cheapo but good starter) and it was 2wd and it wouldn't drive through grass, lol, but my second R/C was an HPI MT (electric) and since it was 4wd it would go through the grass without much effort. Wow mike this is one of those posts where I'm wondering if he'll read all this but I guess I'll just post anyways, hahaha. The HPI MT2 18SStruck is $329 as a kit, you'll need to build it (they're the most fun) and buy fuel and batteries since they don't offer that one in RTR.
My friend got a new Traxxas Jato, and he loves that thing. It's traxxas's new stadium truck. It's supposedly best speed in class, and best acceleration in class, and it actually comes with a 2speed transmission.
Ooohh it even comes with an LSD. Ooohh zero bump suspension too. That keeps your car from sqerving around from even bump you hit (annoying). Hmmm what I like most about the traxxas r/c's is that they offer the electric start. There are other brands that offer electric start now but I'm not sure which ones have it. The Jato is only 2wd though, but it obviously accelerates just fine with just 2 wheels, hehe.
From team losi I'd recommend the xxxNT RTR, since everything you need to get started is in the box. It is a good 2wd stadium truck, and I've seen them tear it up at local races.
The Team Associated RC10GT is a good one too. Here, I'll let them explain why you want it: "No other nitro-powered R/C truck in the world can match the winning record of the RC10GT. Three consecutive NORRCA Truck World Cup wins and over eight National Championships make the GT the winningest nitro truck ever."
Lots and lots of options, it just depends on which "opions" you want.
2-speed transmission, 2wd or 4wd, belt drive or shaft drive, nitro or electric, truck or buggy, etc etc. Good luck sorry I rambled for so long I started getting into it and hell I might be buying a stadium truck this spring just for toolin' down around my parents house since I live up here in a concrete jungle.
