Exhaust painting vs. Heat Wrap

I am debating on whether I want to heat wrap my exhaust or paint it... I was told by my mechanic that he has seen exhaust welds blow out under a heat wrap before. On the other hand the same mechanic said that even a good thick paint job won't insulate nearly as well as a heat wrap.

I am leaning towards the paint job because of the cosmetic aspect. plus I'm pretty sure that I won't be able to count on any decent performance gain from either option.

Your exhaust? Or exhaust manifold?

i think wrapped headers look badass, and it would help keep underhood temps down.

Well personally I'd just leave it...

Otherwise....Ceramic coating is the way to go for aesthetics....heat wrap for making a real difference.

a good ceramic coating from the likes of swain or jet hot will be 10x better than heat wrap. it works better, looks better, but costs more. heat wrap absorbs moisture and can lead to cracking if you wrap a mild steel header.

I had my JDM ITR header wrapped. Made a huge difference in heat in the bay. I gotta get some wrap to do my new header. If it cracks, ill weld it- its not that big of a deal to me.

Sorry this might be a stupid question as i dont' know much about header wrap.

Is it more likely for a header to crack (that's wrapped with heat wrap) if the header is the regural chrome or the cremaic header. I live in texas and i don't need carb number, but i cant' decide if to go with some ebay header of dc sport header. Ceramic or non cermaic.

you get what you pay for. don't go to ebay unless you know for sure what you're getting is a quality part. stay away from ebay brands. we have a thread here on sho regarding poo-poo parts (like megan and obx, etc etc).

I have decided that I am going to simply go with a High Quality paint to coat my header with.

My question is now. What kind of temperatures can i expect to see from my exhaust system. ie. should I buy an exhaust paint that will withstand 1200 F or 2000? Also will my engine produce exhaust hot enough to "disintigrate" my exhaust piping?

I understand that a lot of this depends on the quality of piping however I have read things online that if you wrap your header or give it a good ceramic coat or paint coat that the insulating can cause corrosion or disintigration.

i've heard that heat wraps work best. also they sell a silicone based finish coat that you spray on the wraps to protect them from moisture and stuff. i know at pepboys we have it in black and costs like $8-10.
