Help on custom engine!!!

Hey guys, I've decided to build a high performance NA motor. I'm well prepared to spend time and money on this project, and I'm going to be doing all the work myself, but I need some advice. I was thinking of starting with a B18C from a 95-97 Integ. GSR, but I'm not completely sure. The condition of the engine isn't a big worry, because I'll be completely rebuilding it, pistons, crank, cams, conrods, basically from the ground up. I want to make it fairly high compression, but not so high that I can't use regular fuel. I planned on using avgas or race gas. I need suggestions on what engine to start with, and what brands or dealers I can start with for parts. Any other info would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks guys!

Source a B18C1 longblock from Honda-Tech... thats where theyre cheapest. 12.5:1 compression is about the best you can do on pump gas, any higher you run into detonation problems. Read through what other B-Series NA setups look like, and set a budget and goal. Say your goal is 200 horsepower to the wheels. That being the case, youre looking at around $5000 to do it, maybe more maybe less. Heres a VERY basic rundown of what youll need

B18C1 longblock
Transmission (B16, GSR, or ITR. ITR is more expensive, but has LSD which is a HUGE plus)
Cams- look into Skunk2 Stage2's or Pro1's. The actual cams you decide on are up to you, but ive seen good numbers from those two.
Header- Extremely important. Youll want a 4-2-1 TRI-Y header (SMSP, RMF, Hytech, Rage) Plan on $500-1000 on just the header. Less if you buy used, but not much less.
ARP head studs and rod bolts- not too expensive, but quite important.
An ITR crank wouldnt be a bad idea, as it is balanced and slightly weighted to be more stable at high RPM.
Valvetrain- titanium retainers and dual valvesprings will keep those big cams on lock down- very important.
Bolt ons- these can be done later on if you run out of money, but that includes an intake, intake manifold, exhaust, and header (which I already went into)
Tuning- The most important thing in any aftermarket build. Poor tuning (or no tuning) will kill a motor very quickly. Look into Hondata or Crome to tune with, and some RC310cc injectors to supply the fuel.
Porting- 200whp can be hit without porting, but its a modification that is definetly one of the larger power adders.

Youve got a lot of research to do, and you need to figure out what purpose the engine will serve. A budget needs to be set- and you need to be prepared in the event you exceed it (because you probably will). And lastly, set some goals on power. Dont get too caught up in numbers though- every dyno reads differently.

That should get you started.

I was hoping to get about 300 horse out of it. I know thats a high goal, but I want something that will be able to give most V8s a good run for the money. Mostly track use, occasional street use... I was planning on spending about 10-12K on this motor.

If youre looking for 300 horsepower at the wheels, you have two options really.

1. Fully built all motor K20. That will expire your 12k budget EASILY.

OR

2. A turbo.

Unfortunatly, the B-Series is limited to about 265whp on FULLY BUILT RACE ONLY motors, unless you use forced induction. If youre dead set on all motor, K20 is your best bet (K24 would be even better). 300whp all motor is attainable with them.

ya well i thought that too, apparently we're all wrong, that dyno i posted, i heard some rumors it was a stock 81x87 setup, with ALOT i'm talking a TON of head work, and some monster itbs and s300 system and bolt ons, it made 265.. and its only running 11.5 cr.. i dunno tho its only by word of mouth but i know its a b series.

If Endyn cant do it, it cant be done. The dyno you posted must have some clever editing done. Are they uncorrected numbers?

Endyn got 320 crank out of a 2.0 B-Series using a Dart block with every possible thing done to it. Thats 270whp.

if you want to pull 300whp from a b series you'll need huge displacement, 86x97 or bigger, insane compression, cams bigger than jupiter, and race gas.

Would this setup be possible to get into a 92 Civic Hatch? I'm looking (reading) on what options I have I have been collecting data and trying to do my homework.. (Nissan's were so much easier) I just picked up the car and it will be my daily driver. Just over a year ago a drunk driver hit my Max and totaled it while it was parked in front of my house. Any way's how hard would the above setup be to get into my car? My cousin has the same car and is looking for a gsr block or and itr block just bare block to start.. I still haven't decided on what block to use as the base. But I want to stay N/A and 5K doesn't sound bad. Both of our cars will be built from Block up...

If you are going through this trouble and plan to completely rebuild, then do yourself a favor and start with a better starting point like either a k20 or a k24. 200whp with just bolt-ons. If you actually build it, then 250-300 is very realistic without sacrificing reliability.

u can get 250-300 on a b series...and still be reliable....k series are overrated. the fastest honda/acura is a LSvtec turbo i belive. thats just my opinion......btw im megamax cousin...

If you plan to go all motor b-series, just do a stock K-series. It will cost the same, and make about the same power, if not better. I spent about $5000 on my motor- i could have done a kswap for a bit more, and still had room to make more power.

If youre looking for a budget build with good power, a turbo B18B is a classic choice.

The OP wants N/A, not turbo. You can't double and nearly triple an engines output and expect it to be as reliable as it was when it rolled off the showroom floor. And no, the fastest honda/acura is not a lsvtec turbo...

Considering you can get a k20 to 200whp with simple bolt-ons, it takes very little to make big power.

Tell me why you think k-series are overrated...
