Intercooler but no tubo
hi everyone. i am fairly new to this site but not new to cars and speedin tickets. this site is great. but i concern is that i have a question about intercoolers. i know what they are and how they work but can one be used WITHOUT a turbocharger. no i do not like short ram intake kits because its power drops off throughout the powerband. but if i were to use a cold air induction kit an route it into the intercooler and back out going into the intake manifold would that work. an no i am not a ricer not by a long shot. i am studying to get my ASE certification before i graduate from high school. no i do not have a car yet, but this summer i will be and i am getting my money ready and my research down pack. please and thanks for any suggestions.

they are designed to flow compressed air. my guess is it would be very restrictive, but i can't say i've ever heard or read about anyone doing it, so..
if short rams did nothing but lose power, ppl wouldn't buy them.
if you were re-routing the air, a cold air "kit" would be useless to you. you would need some tubing and some fabrication knowledge.
also i'm pretty sure when ppl say it, they're saying "down pat."
welcome to SHO.

it's pointless you would be trying to cool the incoming outside air to the same temperature as the outside air flowing past the intercooler. an intercooler works because the hot (200-250 degrees F) exhaust air coming to the turbo runs through it internally and the air running past the outside of the intercooler cools down those incoming gases. all you would be doing is adding friction an slowing down the air to your intake.

Bad idea. It's pointless to do. You will lose throttle response because the air has a much longer distanst to travel, and there isn't enough pressure for the incoming air to move fast to get to the throttle body. With a turbo engine, the turbo makes alot of pressure for the air to move through all the piping, with a n/a motor, there isn't enough, thus, loss of power, and really crappy throttle repsonse.
