85 CRX Si - Terrible engine noise

Hello,

I have a '85 CRX Si, 1.5 fuel injected, all stock. I used it as a commuter for a couple of years until the engine started making a loud clanking noise, which coincides with the RPMs. At around the same time, the red PGM-FI dash light started coming on while running. Since then it's been sitting. I now drive my 90 CRX Si, but would still like to use the old 85 as a beater if I can get it running reliably again.

Here is a youtube video I just took, demonstrating the engine noise: YouTube - 85 CRX Si Engine Noise

If I rev the engine, the clicking noise gets louder and faster along with the engine RPMs.

I thought the noise might have been valves, so I tried adjusting them according to my service manual, but it didn't seem to have an effect on the noise. I've spent a number of hours poking around this engine without any success locating the source of the noise. It's pretty loud so I can't really tell where it's coming from, but it seems to be slightly louder on the rear or left side of the engine. There are no codes from what I can tell - ECM under the seat shows a single solid red light only.

I have plenty of other vehicles, and this car probably isn't really worth anything if I tried to sell it.. So I'd rather just fix it as cheaply as I can and get some more use out of it. Any help tracking down & fixing this noise, and the PGM-FI error light, is much appreciated.

First.. any chance you live in SoCal? I would love to take the car off your hands.. and RPR will be able to help you with any questions that you have with your 1st gen CRX (check out my sig) . . but it may make you like it though, thus ruining my chances of obtaining it. .. Anyway, I'm not sure but how does the oil look? clean, dirty? does the filter have any metal shaving in it? Is it running lean, or smoking from the exhaust at all? Good luck with it. Check spark, vac leaks, bubbles in coolant or anything I guess that can make your car run like crap.

No, I'm in WA state. All the usual stuff checks out. Oil, coolant, plugs, etc. Did a valve adjustment... It's a metal-on-metal clanking or rattling sound. It came on fairly suddenly. Maybe a bad pulley or bearing or something, just cant seem to track it down.

loud clanking that goes with the rpms sounds like a rod bearing to me.
