Advancing and Retarding timing? Benefits?

I was just wondering, what is the benefits of advancing and retarding your timing. I heard that advancing increases power and retarding increases torque since the piston would travel longer? Is this true or am i wrong in saying this?

Also, what type of octane would be needed if you advanced or retarded your timing.

thanks

ignition timing or cam timing?

ignition timing doesn't really add much power, but it will move the power to the area of the powerband that you want.
Depending on if you're running Turbo, nitrous, or all motor, cam timing can see HUGE gains. on my All motor CRX, I was able to wring 20 HP out of the 1.6l engine just changing the timing.
obviously with turbo or nitrous (FI) engines, you're going to want the engine to be able to exhale all that air forced into the cylinders... so retarding cam timing will be of great benifit

I was referring to cam timing and what are its benefits and what's the physics/reasoning behind it?

Since you brought up cam timing, what is the physics/reasoning behind it?

Wow, big misunderstanding there.. but yeah, thanks for the replies....... but how does this timing cam and timing thing work (physics? ie how it does it in the motor and how it affects the motor)

And what kind of octane would be needed for advancing/retarding timing?

thanks again

basically, by having the cam timing advanced, you're gaining low end power (kind of the oposite of ignition timing) and mid range power, retarding timing will have the reverse effect - of course this system is 10x more complicated when dealing with two cams... which allow for seperate cam adjustments (the one and ONLY benifit to DOHC engines) this allows for vavle overlap and such. it's pretty complicated stuff, I wouldn't suggest you go messing with your timing unless you know exsactly what you're doing

BTW cam timing has little if no effect on octane ratings you need to use

Lightbulb timing

:byye to get faster acceleration, just push the dist toward the rear with the engine off. thats advancing thus giving you a fast take off and mid range, retarding you will suffer take off but at the end of mid range and beggining of top end u will feel the car take off.... now when advancing turning the dist counter clockwise all the way, you will have to use 76, shell, mobill 90 and up octane, any lower you u risk kicking and harming the crap of crank bearings and warping valve seats from nock and pinging....... :byye could someone help me on finding a good cheap crx si for sale 88-92 :eek
