I could put $25 in my tank and my gas gauge would rise to about 3/4 of a tank, from a little bit of E. This would last me a little under 200 miles. I am using a 1.5 B2 BTW. I dont know if this is weird or not but theres more. I have a half tank of gas and decided to throw $25 in it anyway; fills to the top, and then some . Any way, now I'm barely at 3/4 of a tank and I've gone 100 miles. Also, when i used to take my gas cap off I'd hear this air rushing in ( or out can't really tell), which i got an answer before saying it is nothing to worry about. Now i don't hear it at all. Im not complaining ,lol noooo. I was just wondering if anybody has any idea to what caused this. I've been driving this car for about 3 weeks and it just started doing this.

Little confused with you english but here goes....Your change in mpg could be caused by your driving methods, driving distances (between stops), and type of roadways you've been driving on. Oh and by the way, I was unable to get a straight answer on this..how many mpgs are you getting? Because before I swapped my engines I was getting 360 miles highway out of a full tank and like 300 on back roads...Although I'm used to getting a certain mpg in my Blazer and just recently filled it up for twenty less than it usually takes so maybe we're in some kind of gas warp...
My bad, I'm tired, and I didn't read through it thoroughly, but enough excuses.

See but look. Your MPG is about 60 miles difference, which is about average. What that mess above you is saying is. 3/4 Tank of gas is like 180 miles ( rough estimate)< --that was mostly highway, but I got a little more in the city.
Now I am at 100 miles and its not even close to being half empty <--- 80 of it was highway. But still..a 1/4 of a tank cant make that much of a difference. Maybe half...maybe..But if that was the case then my gauge is waaay off.

That makes sense..I wasn't the only 1 effected.

Your gas gauge maybe off, I suggest testing it by filling up ad resetting your trip odometer and watching it along with your gas gauge this should give a good idea as if it's working properly or not.

thats not it at all actually. the reason you have better mileage is because your tank is full instead of half full. what happens is the liquid in the tank being higher to the top lessens the space in which fumes are created, thus your mileage incereases, as you lose gas fumes are built and they burn quicker when they have a higher build-up sort of like a beer can of gas versus a gallon of gas. its a better idea to keep a full tank.
some other tips are when your pumping gas, pump ot as slow as possible, this creates less sloshing. fuel guns have a fume return, so if you fill faster the fumes are forced out of the tank and you lose the extra fumes.
also, dont ever fill when a tanker truck is filling the main tanks. it stirs up the nasty shit on the bottom and you could possibly get it in your tank

...does no one in here know how to calculate gas mileage? Holy shit.
It could be a multitude of things ranging from weather to driving style to how inaccurate the stock gas gauge is. I've had tanks where my car was reading 180 miles at half tank and 230 miles at half tank (from full of course) and it always worked out to be within 2-3 mpg over the full tank.

Exactly.Which is what I am trying to figure out. Niether driving style or weather has changed. Like i said I've been driving this car for about 3 weeks now.

Wouldn't you want to figure out what you did to get that 230 again??

I tend to agree to the "fume" explaination. The Evap emmissions get burnt also. a lot of variables. Maybe the reason for not hearing the pressure anymore is an evap leak of some sort so you don't get the proper vacuum. I don't know if the system was the same in '88 as it is now, but it can be a disaster sometimes

I wasn't saying that was what it was, I was just telling him what the dude a few posts up was saying....Just check his damn odometer, it's more accurate anyway...IMO

I already figured it out, it's called an inaccurate gas gauge. Gas mileage fluctuating 5% is pretty normal also and the 2-3 mpg is well a lot less of a swing than there would be if I actually only got 180 miles instead of 230 on a half tank (it'd be a swing of around 10 mpg, never happens with my car).
