ok i was going to do a b18a1 swap into my 88 crx. but after giving it more thought i have decided to ask what would be the best motor if im on a budget and still give me more power.
Depends what you mean by "budget" and on what specifically did you give some thought
D16 DOHC zc (Not integra ZC) with a ZC trans and SI 5th. You have a car thats half the size of a traditional compact car, quick ratio trans +Factory LSD and add an upgraded clutch and flywheel, this car will feel plenty quick. Stoplight to stoplight anyway
or
same motor with a turbo, then id probably opt to go for longer geared trans, maybe as far as a STD version but then you dont have the LSD
or
B18A/B but keep in mind youll have to change mounts and harness as well as pay the price for the motor. BUT
Each option could potentially be cheaper than the other, in all reality it depends on whos doing your work and where your getting your parts. You need a more defined foundation to build from. Whats my power goal? How do i want to acheive it? Is it a DD or weekend warrior?
the whole b18a1 swap idea, and im really on like a $1500 budget. i got a b18 block and head but it needs a ton of parts intake manifold, wiring harness, ecu, tranny, etc.. i would love to build the b18 but if i can put a d series motor in this car and still get a decent amount of power out of it that just makes a little more sense to me. plus this is my first honda project and im doing it by myself so im trying to start out with a decently priced simple swap
honestly. If your not looking for power then why not use a D series. Just to get the car on its feet. I can find these around here complete w/trans for 1-$200. B series usually go for twice that amount. All im saying is if your project is starting out as a project and not a running car, especially w/ a pulled motor 9 out of 10 youll be dropping $ into things like chassis and suspension, wheels and tires, who knows?
But start with a D15/16, doesnt really matter as theryre all slow, do some minor mods or none at all. Save money up, fix any additional repairs and then figure out where you really wanna go. In reality, you want a good running car before doing any type of modifying. FI D, FI B, N/A B, N/A K, N/A H....options are pretty much endless
Swap out the rods and crank with B18A/B Rods, with a 1.6 crank, vitara pistons and and a 1.6 head.
Then find a 14b turbo, log manfiold, 2.5-3' full exhuast, Chipped p28, dsm 440 injectors, walboro 255lph, wide band sensor and a tuner and youll have something "better" than your 1.5
I think you want to check your piston any trusted mechanic If your not looking for power then why not use a D series. Just to get the car on its feet. I can find these around here complete w/trans for 1-$200. B series usually go for twice that amount.
