Hey all, I'm researching candidates for an LS1 swap, and one of the chassis that looks promising as far as weight goes is the CRX. mainly, what I want to know are 3 things:
1) engine bay dimensions
2) Width of the rear end
3) approximate weight of the stock engine
1 is most important as it's going to tell me the feasability of this project, and 3 is going to tell me how much I need to modify the suspension (my block should weigh in around 280lbs when complete).
in case people are wondering I'm planning on the following setup
Modded LS1 with a t56 tranny linked to a drive shaft and 11 bolt differential from a holden (austrailian GM) Trans Am. Plans for the car is to completely gut it, and chop the frame as needed to install the tranny, and also cut down the axles on the diff to fit the width of the rear wells. the front suspension will be moderately easy as there are plenty of donor CRX's in the 'yards for me to grab pieces to fabricate a functional Front suspension.
I honestly don't think you will be fitting an LS1 longitudinally in the CRX engine bay without serious firewall modification. A B-series engine barely fits transversely, and with a supercharger there is almost zero clearance.
Best of luck to you though, I'd like to see someone actually complete a project like this with an original CRX chassis instead of a tube-frame.
TTT for you; if nobody has the information by tomorrow I will go out with a tape measure and try to get some measurements.
1. it can be done
2. tub it and chop the axle
3. not sue on the weight but me and a friend can easily lift the motor/tranny combo
you cant really chp the frame cause there is no frame its unibody
front suspension, youre gonna need somethign other than stock junkyard parts, but it seems to me youre building a drag car so i dont think you really need to do anything to it, just make sure its stock height

yeah, it's a dedicated track car. thanks for all the responses. If the engine bay is close to what I need, the only real problem I'll have is modifying the firewall to fit the belhousing of the T56 to have a clean install.

In the current Grassroots motor sports there is a Chevy 350 powered CRX that enter the $2004 dollar challange. It ran 11s, the tire stuck out a good 5 inches on each side(you would need flares to be street legal) and requied a a very good engineiring back ground, expert fabercation skills and way more time than you would expect.
It was in a 86 CRX and built buy Crabill Racing. who are Dennis Crabill,Chad Brodbeck, Joel Barnett, Jerry Schaffer, Jamie Redcay, Brain Keener, Pat Brown. It took them 6 months to build it in York Pa.
I would suggest looking at local to york autocross website and see if you can find these guys e-mail. They might help they might blow you off(i would want to tell someone how i put this thing together). Good luck though a post pics if it ever gets done.
