speedometer cable

well, i got it yesterday and a new problem arose. the trans is from a 88 crx si, and the speedometer cable broke. i went ahead and ordered a new one today, which will arrive at work tomorrow via advaNCE auto parts delivery.

however none of the assholes at work tomorrow are going to help me install, and the nice guys have the day off. so i would much appreciate any advice on how to change the speedo cable on a 88crxsi trans, 90crxsi chassis.

thank you.

oh and the knock sensor..where is it?

my best word of advice, because i've done this before, is make sure you fish it through with the old speedo cable because otherwise its a bitch to get it through all the stuff behind the dash

Yea, tape/tie the old one to the new one to pull it through the firewall. Other than that its easy, take the cluster off a few screws under it and a few on the top back side facing the windshield(you need a stubby screw driver)under little plastic clips. Should take you.....30mins at most. As far as a knock sensor, if its a stock crx engine you have no knock sensor. If you have a newer swap its on the backside of the engine near/above the oil filter usually.

Knock sensor is easy to change, just a big socket, and I think its in a coolant passage so have a bucket handy to catch coolant and just make the switch a quick one, use teflon paste not the tape, you dont want pieces of tape in your cooling system.

mad props for the advice. tomorrow, brake pads are a must. only big enough coolant passages are on the front of the block right? so one of the rad hoses? idk. i was gonna look it up on alldata.com and for some reason it wont let us log in at work. it WOULD tell me exactly where and how to change it with pictures. damn the computer system. but thanks ill have a look at it tomorrow.

This pic might help:

The big two prong plug is the thermister for the fan control, the lowest one is the oil pressure sender for your guages, and I cant remember what the other one is right now. This might or might not help, this is a picture of a block that from the factory does not have a knock sensor, i used it for when I was doing my ls/vtec swap you see some vtec blocks had a knock and some didnt so if the computer was looking for one and you go and put the vtec on a nonvtec block that didnt have a knock you had to find a place to put it, these guys here put it in the altenator mounting hole. But anyway, the knock sensor should be somewhere in this location on the back of the block. and now that I think about it, it may not be in a coolant passage, but its on the back for sure.

The one above the oil pressure sender is your coolant sending unit, that is what sends a signal to your temp gauge

Im not saying Im an expert but Im speaking from experience. When I did my ls/vtec swap, after all was said and done my temp guage on the dash was not working, and I was throwing the code for the engine water temp sensor. Which I was expecting something to not work because I had a broken plug on the side of the head by the distributor. It was a single wire connection, I fixed the plug and my temp guage started to work. On that side of the head also is the engine water temp sensor, which I was getting the code for it just ended up being I had two plugs mixed up and I fixed that and the cel went away. For clarity check this out. www.crxpower.net/~silverkorn/ma nuals/CRX_Workshop_Manual.pdf

Take out the space.
Look under the electrical section and then hit the coolant temp guage. Then look under Cooling fan system and you'll see the fan switch has the two big fatty plugs. Now the green plug next to the oil sender and fan switch, I dont know what its for.
