I've owned my 5th gen for about three years and never had any problems with oil consumption or burning. One day I'm driving home, take a corner hard, and my check engine light comes on. Finish the corner and it blinks off immediately. I thought that was odd, so first thing I do is check the fluids. Pull up the dipstick, wipe it, pull it out and it's bone dry. Not a drop of oil on it anywhere. Anyway, it took 3+ quarts to bring it back up to normal.
I'm kinda worried at this point and drop it off at the Honda dealer to inspect. Their mechanics check it out and tell me they can't find any oil leaking out anywhere. I told the guy, there's no fucking way my car lost 3 quarts of oil since my last oil change 1000 miles ago. He tells me, "Oh its normal to consume that much oil." I said, "I don't think so." From then on, I've been checking every time I fill up with gas.
Update: I did some research online and found Honda's technical service bulletins. According to bulletin 00-073 "A CONDITION MAY EXIST WHERE THE FRONT BALANCER SHAFT OIL SEAL MAY BACK OUT OF THE OIL PUMP HOUSING OVER TIME. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE OIL CAN BE RAPIDLY PUMPED OUT OF THE ENGINE WITHOUT WARNING CAUSING SERIOUS ENGINE DAMAGE IF CONTINUED TO RUN."
Thanks Honda for catching that one.. assholes.

i experienced simliar incidence. Not exact symptoms but basically they said "oh it's normal, supposed to do that."
I tell them "no i want an answer, never happened before, why now?" so i made them look again with a different technician, then they realized the problem and corrected.
Mods: stock but has E55 Bi-xenon projector HIDs on.
almost all 4th gen older VTEC's burn oil after the hi cam enages and stays in there for a while. its because of bad rings. I'm starting to see some 5th gen doing the same thing now since its gotten older.
my 93 VTEC with 97k miles on it, running thur Wyoming on way to Arizona, i stopped at a gas station, checked the oil got gas, headed out on a long stretch road where i stayed at about 120 mph for about a good 5-10 miles. Stopped at a gas station about 200 miles later, also going past 100 at some times.
When i checked the oil dip stick, i think about 1 maybe 2 quarts low. I drove another 300-350 miles only going past vtec for accelration to 60mph. no high speed runs, and no oil was lost.
So for my theory it burns oil when u stay in vtec for a long period of time. but im not so sure if the 5th gen shares the same problems. but im sure it does.
all older 4th gens had that recall, in fact it was for the f22 and h23, all had balancer shafts, my stepdad called me one day and was like i backed out of the driveway and saw oil turned off the cr, thier seal had come out in the driveway, they paid 700 bucks for the timing belt ect..i told him about the recall and honda reimbursed them for everything...since the sela leaks on the timing belt it has to be redone, i bought the bracket for 2 dollars to keep the seal from backing off, though ive yet to put it on..im lazy, and i never heard the JDM motor s having this problem..well see
the balance shaft blocker bracket was a recall on almost all preludes. if you lost that much oil, pull off your timing cover and see if there is oil everywhere. if so, a new timing belt is needed
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think that this was something Honda was doing a recall on. A TSB is more of a "We think you might have problems with this, but we're not going to pay to fix it" kind of thing. I almost wish I had problems with it again so I could show somebody up the ladder this mistake and get a brand new engine.

It's a relief to hear you say that you havent heard of JDM engines giving this problem, cause i was about to get scared. Also i've never had one problem at all with my h22 burning any oil at all, btw I have a JDM engine.
any honda vtec engine burning a little oil normal...mine burn about half a quart every 1500 miles, so dont be alarm if ur dip stick reads half way between the 2 holes....
I think HONDA customer service sucks ass , that is the reason i sold my last honda car and will never buy another one... cuz they think they make the BEST cars in the WORLD and dont want to take care of any service issues...
hehe nice thought, so what did you get instead? and if you say a german brand i'm going to laugh my ass off. (my job has alot to do with european vehicles )
stopping your car and immediately checking the oil will not give you an accurate reading of how much oil is in there...oil is being sprayed all throughout your engine while its running and it hasnt all gotten down to the oil pan where the dipstick is if you just turned it off
too much oil can hurt an engine too, think about that next time you dump 3 quarts in w/o thinking twice...
my oil light blinks on for an instant sometimes when im taking a hard corner or making a really fast U turn and its been a while since my last change...i say dont put in more than a quart or two at a time and remember that your dipstick is less accurate than you think it is
