Koni H&R drop.....complete comments

suspension installed - this was posted 2 weeks or so ago - but in my old post titled koni yellow and H & R drop info wanted....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everything is in the car now - had to redo the rear struts, first time they went in set the spring perch to the highest of three settings on the koni - when the car was let down the ride height was actually higher than stock....this was a little shocking.

Let it be known to not use the high or middle setting on rear koni's - this will result in a stock or highter look. And you will be taking them out, dissasembling and reassembling....for sure.

The front looks perfect I would say about 1.75 - 2 inch gap - the rears, after setting clip to lowest setting look very good, gap is noticably more than in the front, but does not look goofy probably in the 2.5 inch area.

One thing -- the mechanic I had install them set the spring perches in the rear upside down - we didn't notice this until he had put them back in for the second time, when set correctly the perch will result in what looks to be an extra 1/2 inch drop. The springs conform with the perch fine even though upside down. The potential issue is the very interior part of the perch normally surrounds the clip's outward facing surface, preventing it from un-cliping and falling. He will switch it for me, but in the temporary we put some metal hose clamps right under the clips, should be rock solid. I have been driving it for 4 days now, no problems, springs look alligned, no marks on the koni's to indicate that the spring is moving around.

The handling with koni's set to 3/4 turn from softest is nice. I sell cars for a living, both mazda and mitsubishi - I would liken this to be pretty close to the Mazdaspeed 3, turn in is not quite as crisp as an EVO, but not bad, zero body roll even when zig zagging on a freeway loop at whatever speed. The crazy thing about it is that the ride quality is barely changed as far as harshness, I can't even really decern if there is any diff from stock. Tires are yoko parada spec2 215.45.17

Another thing to point out, with the clip set to the lowest setting (in the rear) the springs were really approaching the point of not offering much tension. You could just slightly move the base of the spring by reaching in pushing with two hands. This is with the car up on a hoist obviously. I am not sure if there is any implication here, with the car on the ground the spring is loaded up more, one other Tech who was there mentioned that I may want to leave it set up like this instead of lowering the overall tension of the spring by fliping the perch. I think I am going to flip the perch anyway.

Nuff for now - I will post some pics when I get a chance - could be weeks.

UPDATE: Now had the suspension for a few weeks, very livable - liking it a lot - still planning on getting the spring perches in the back turned over - unless somebody here says that there could be no complications from it - or that it may be compromising the performance. I am working on getting picks still.

I would take the suspension off in the rear and install the spring perches correctly.

you could seriously damage your car or shocks if you don't install them properly.

I would set everything to the middle spring perch height.....H&R knows how to design springs.....and they designed them to be a certain height in relation to the front and back and the weight distribution of the car.

just install everything correctly and see how it does
