There are a few old threads about tuning a cam'd car w/ a VAFC, however none of the answers were really straight forward. I plan on getting some crower stage two cams with upgraded springs and retainers fairly soon and I was wondering if a tune off a VAFC would be enough. I eventually plan on getting a S300 but I was wondering if the VAFC will work for now or if it will give me problems with the stage2 cams. Thanks guys!

oh i completely understand i woulnt get all the potential out of them that i would with a hondata or what not. im just making sure my car isnt going to idle/run like shit tuned off the VAFC. i plan on having some guys in town tune it who know what they're doing so as long as they can get it to idle/run stable off the VAFC then there is no worries.

Im facing your problem right now...well kind-of. I have my stage 2 cams in and it runs super rich, and stalls on idle, but from what i hear the VAFC doesnt do anything about the idle. Doesnt help much but a tuner told me that my VAFC wont help the idle but will help it some in the higher rpm

if memory serves me correctly, a vafc cannot adjust fuel trim for closed loop.....someone correct me on that.
anyway, i wouldnt advise running a vafc mainly because you could sell the vafc and buy a p28, have it socketed, then get tuned for pretty cheap altogether. You'll get more/better power, the motor will feel more peppy, it'll idle like stock.
Why would you buy cams only to limit their power on the tune?

tru, why not get a chipped ecu with a basemap for stage 2 cams from phearable for under 200?

that's correct, but only when it comes to OBDII. If you're OBDI, the AFC can adjust closed loop operation.
honestly the rest of the posts here are right... you're better off going with a different tuning solution. Hondata or a Phearable option is a much better choice, and you'll come out pretty close to the same price range with a better tune.
Just feel lucky you don't have an S2000 in this situation.
oh dont get me wrong i am for sure getting another tuning method sometime soon down the road, i was just making sure my DD will operate until then off a VAFC tune. i just dont want any problems until the $ comes around for a phearable or hondata. as long as its not bogging out on me and what not then i can handle a LITTLE BIT of a rough idle, like i said as log as its not bogging/stalling etc.

It will idle fine, you don't need someone to tune your VAFC. If you can't tune that yourself while you're at the dyno I'd not even attempt cams lol.
However if you could bump compression to lets say 11.5 to 1 with those cams you'd put down #'s you'd never imagine with a vafc.
I had 8 bent intake valves with JE 11.5 to 1 and crower stage 2's and it put down 193hp to the wheels on a mustang dyno
eventuallly raising the compression is going to happen, i figured i would start with the head first. i may just stick with some type-s pistons, a good head gasket and some high comp valves, but thats a ways down the line. i would like to have somewere close to 12:1 compression though. i really dont know what i want, i can never make up my mind.
