LOS ANGELES -- Following in the footsteps of sister division Cadillac, Hummer will introduce high-performance models, badged Alpha, starting in the first quarter of next year.
Roger McCormack, Hummer's product director, says the Alpha badge is meant to enhance the brand, as the V badge has done for Cadillac. Saturn, Chevrolet and Pontiac also have performance badges.
Hummer sales dropped 20.3 percent through nine months this year compared with the same period of 2003. Through September, dealers sold 340 H1s, down from 531 in the year-ago period. In the first nine months, 19,944 H2s were sold, compared with 24,922 last year.
The H1 will get the first Alpha model. McCormack says the 2006 H1 Alpha will come with a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine making 300 hp and 520 pounds-feet of torque. The regular H1s have a 6.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine making 205 hp and 440 pounds-feet of torque.
The H1 Alpha will use the Allison 1000 five-speed automatic transmission. The current models have GM's Hydramatic four-speed electronically controlled transmission.
The Allison transmission is designed to handle high horsepower and torque loads. Its low gear ratio provides good acceleration when pulling heavy loads.
McCormack says Hummer is starting Alpha on the H1 because the more refined powertrain will improve interior noise levels.
The H1 Alpha will have better off-road capabilities, a bigger fuel tank and better fuel economy, he says.
The Alpha model will travel an estimated 570 miles on a fill-up, McCormack says. The current H1s have a 25-gallon main tank and a 17-gallon reserve tank.
The Alpha model will have only two exterior changes: It will be 2 inches taller than the regular SUV and will have Alpha badging.
"It is our intent to expand Alpha over the rest of the line," McCormack says. He did not say when.
Hummer also has the full-sized H2. A mid-sized H3 will go on sale during the second quarter of 2005.
McCormack says the Alpha H2 and H3 also will have more horsepower, but specifications have not been determined. He did not have sales projections or a price for the new H1 Alpha.
The Hummer H1 is built by AM General in Mishawaka, Ind. It comes in two models: a four-door open top and a four-door wagon. The 2005 models are priced at $106,185 for the open top and $117,508 for the wagon, including destination charges.
Faced with slumping sales, Hummer is readying a new lineup of high-performance variants of its standard vehicles known as the Alpha series the first of which will be the H1 Alpha. The H1 Alpha will be available as both a four-door open top and a four-door wagon. The engine on both models will be a brand-new Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel which produces 310 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque at 1,500 rpm. Along with its new Allison 1000 five-speed automatic transmission, this powertrain makes significant improvements in terms of fuel economy, emissions levels and off-road capability over the H1's previous power plant. Additional changes to the H1 include a new, larger capacity fuel tank and a body height increase of 2 inches which is meant to accommodate the new engine and transmission as well as add additional clearance. Hummer will phase out the current version of the H1 this fall to make room for the Alpha next spring. The open-top model will sell for $106,185, while the wagon will be priced at $117,508.
right.. make faster and more fuel thristy SUV.. wow they come out with a briliant strategy....why cant u put that Sierra hybrid engine... and make it MACHO and HYBRID and POWERFUL SUV from GM... i love H1 but its too heavy too weak and too gas thirsty.. they killed the diesel model long time ago.. now they bring it back i guess because of fuel price sky rocketing.... all its good for its just take up alot of space in the streets.. highways and also in the garage.
No one in their right mind would buy a 110k Hummer if they can't make a good 45k Hummer without tons of problems.
h1s have always been around 100.
the shitty counterpart h2 is what youre thinking about that costs 50.

go take it then. i'll see you at the mobil station in huntington beach every two days or so.
see. thats the thing. generally speaking. the only ones that complain about gas prices are the ones driving little cars. or the ones that own suvs and dont need them. if you put your car to work.(suvs towing and moving shit.) whats there to complain about. i know dropping 60 bucks every 4 or 5 days is bad but hey. i chose the car. i can handle and empty wallet once a week. doesnt bug me any. and if i did buy the h1. i dont think id be worrying too much about the gas consumption. and questions for your little "witty" remark. why are you going to see me at a mobil? i pump chevron. and you wouldnt see me every two days. unless the car youre driving is just as bad.

i meant i'd see you there when i pass by. then probably you'd actually get to talk to me every two weeks or so. anyway, here's to generalizing; so what if you're gonna put that H1 to work? more power to you. you have a valid reason as to why you'd need an SUV that big . what about the other 90 percent that don't? i've seen single women driving H2s. SINGLE.. WOMAN.. what does she need that SUV for? you know, now that i think about it, i'm glad that H1 is so ugly. maybe it'll discourage those buyers that won't use it for anything other than city driving, but then again, people bought the H2. if you really ask the majority of those that own those SUVs here in california, what do you think they'll tell you? and if they do tell you something, would you think it's a good reason?

youll be surprised. i met a few H2's and H1's owner. most of them dont drive their car everyday due to the gas prices. its more of like a status symbol for the weekend people.
wow...in my local area, the way that regular unleaded gas prices are, it would just cost 96.96 to fill that bitch up. fugg that shiet

for the both of you. or the rest of you. an h2 is a glorified box on wheels. its a cock replacement. the only peopel that buy h2s and denalis are people that need the "i drive a luxUV" now youre all going to say something about my escalade. but before you get there im gonna say my part. the denali is an escalde on the inside. exterior is diff. what it lacks is the engine.no other car in the gm line uses the escalades engine.(base. esv. ext.) or at least the h2 and the denali are watered down. i use my car for what it is on a weekly basis at least. ever since snow season ive been making trips up and down every monday and friday. its cool though cause my friends split the gas tank.
and people do buy suvs like flyracer and devine say. but the people that do buy h1s are either filthy rich and dont bitch about gas prices or theyre "playing" with their car so much that its worth it to them. and it doesnt matter that the h1 might be considered ugly to some of you. it will do things you wouldnt imagine. goto the hummer site. check out the h1. click on movies in the nav on the left. watch the 4th/last movie. no other car can do that. its a great thing when youre going mudding and you can tow a truck that got stuck towing another truck out. meh. maybe im just defending myself. heh.

Edmunds
About time they put a half ass engine in the monster. That's the only thing I hated about the H1. The diesel was a god awful POS and the gas burner was underpowered as well.
no other car can do that. its a great thing when youre going mudding and you can tow a truck that got stuck towing another truck out. meh. maybe im just defending myself. heh.

"European and (particularly) American cars are rarely seen clambering along these pock-marked roads. Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki and the Koreans Kia and Daewoo lord their supremacy over GM and Ford here, with 'premium' cars like BMWs and Mercedes reserved only for travelling dignitaries, and usually penned in air-conditioned car ports most of the year. Even the rare Land Rover Defenders or Series Is that we saw were usually slapped with signs saying en venta (for sale), or else vanishing into rusty graves by the roadside. Testament, surely, to the Japanese car industry's commitment to reliability and endurance, borne out year after year in customer satisfaction surveys."
