Acura’s Image Issues

WASHINGTON – Debuting in 1986, it was the first to challenge the German luxury marques’ U.S. dominance, yet American Honda Motor Co. Inc.’s Acura brand has never quite lived up to its intentions.

While its vehicles sell well enough, Acura’s image has yet to achieve par with the Mercedes-Benz and BMW brands, or even that of Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus.

There are a multitude of reasons: Acura lacks a V-8 engine; other than the NSX supercar, no other model has rear-wheel drive; and its vehicles feel, well, like really nice Hondas.

To put itself on a more even playing field, Acura has given its flagship RL a complete makeover.

The current RL, which is 8 years old, sold a paltry 3,535 units through September, a 35.2% falloff from the unspectacular 5,457 sold in like-2003.

Market share is a piddling 0.4% for the year.

However, Acura optimistically expects to sell 20,000 units of the redesigned RL. (See related story: Acura Expects 20,000 Annual Sales for RL)

Although it appears ambitious, Acura likely can achieve that goal. But the ’05 RL’s sales still will fall far short of the BMW 5-Series (43,714 units in the ’04 model year) and Mercedes E-Class (58,088).

Still, Acura says it has confidence in the ’05 RL.

Based on the same global midsize sedan platform as the Honda Accord and Acura TSX and TL, the new RL, indeed, is a marked improvement over the previous generation. Steering, ride and handling are improved notably.

The RL has grown 1.1 ins. (2.8 cm) in width, but overall length is reduced 3 ins. (7.6 cm). The wheelbase is downsized 4.4 ins. (11.2 cm).

The exterior gets a major overhaul from the ’04 RL’s dull and dated styling, and now follows the sharp, angular family resemblance the brand has established with the TL and TSX. The interior is vastly improved as well, with the impeccable fit and finish Honda is known for.

The dash is clean, with a central knob (Interface Dial) to control audio, air conditioning and navigation functions. The look is not dissimilar to BMW’s iDrive system but miles ahead in functionality and ease of use.

Should the driver choose not to use the ID, there are separate buttons for all three functions, or a voice-recognition system with which to make a selection.

The RL is the first recipient of Honda’s new Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive system, which, like its ambitious name suggests, does provide superb handling.

The SH AWD system is the first of its kind, says Acura, delivering torque strategically not just front to rear, but also left to right.

During straight-line cruising and moderate cornering, up to 70% of torque is at the front wheels; during full-throttle acceleration that same percentage is shifted to the rear.

In cornering, up to 100% of rear torque is sent to the outer wheel to improve performance, stability and traction, Honda says.

The 3.5L VTEC V-6 engine, mated to a 5-speed automatic Sequential SportShift transmission, delivers 300 hp and 260 lb.-ft. (Nm 353) of torque, besting the outgoing RL by 75 hp and 29 lb.-ft. (Nm 39) of torque.

In a circuit track test with the 5-Series, E-Class and Audi A6, the RL’s steering and cornering is noticeably better than Audi’s and on par with the others. There is noticeable handling improvement over the outgoing RL.

Although the ’05 RL has no available options, Acura is banking on its standard in-car satellite AcuraLink navigation system to move the model.

The auto maker says the system is the first of its kind in North America, with the ability to receive real-time traffic, accident and construction information for 20 major metropolitan areas via its connection to XM Satellite Radio’s XM NavTraffic service.

AcuraLink performed admirably in a test. However, it only provides real-time information for highways, and, as experienced here driving in downtown Washington, traffic, accidents and construction backups are everywhere, not just on the interstates.

The real question is whether buyers will pay $48,900 for the new RL. Acura executives emphasize that the vehicle is less expensive than a comparably equipped A6, 5-Series or E-Class. But will status-conscience luxury owners care?

The Acura must compete with an indiscernible sense of opulence behind the wheel of a Mercedes or BMW. Although the auto maker seems to have done everything right with the new RL, it remains to be seen if this is the vehicle that can vault Acura to the level of its German competitors.

the rl always seemed bulky to me, more like a lexus. big, luxerious, and stuff. i cant see it on the track. the price tag is outragous, $49,xxx?. i dont care if their competing with audi's or bimmers or benz's. there doin some wierd shit over at Honda/Acura, they were supposed to offer the public dope cars that could compete with da german cars at a reasonable price. thats was their edge. now there just getting money hungry. would i buy a acura over a bimmer? thats a close one, i dont think so. at least not yet. that auto tranny isnt winning over any consumers also. at least you can get a manual with almost any bimmer.

well.. it look like the trend is moving to AWD... S-Class models are now equipped with 4matic from factory Bimmer start putting AWD. Audi is always FWD or AWD.. Bimmer curently onli have 3 series AWD. but in the future i bet they also gonna put AWD.
Read at the car survey.. ppl are choosing safety 1st when they buy a car. AWD give dat peace of mind during bad weather.

I have generally like all of Acura's cars, but i too never put them on the same page as the european (or even japanese) marquees. As mentioned in the article, trying to compete with the big dogs that offer v8's, and v12's as well as Rwd and AWD when all you've got is FWD and an engine no larger than a N/A 3.5 v6 with an output south of 300 horses is VERY tough.

I'd like Honda to remake Acura the way GM did Cadillac. While the AWD 300hp RL is a very nice step in the right direction, they'll have to quicken the pace. Cadillac a maker of large FWD yachts for the oldies, is already on route to establishing themselves as a world-class luxury brand that can be compared to the likes of Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar, and BMW. Only 3 or so years into their transformation, they already have a 6 figure v12 Cadillac sedan planned. The whole lineup looks great across the board. While i don't expect a 6 figure v12 powered luxury sedan from Acura, i'd like for them to be a little more aggressive in making a name for themselves in the luxury car market as a world-class luxury brand. Ditch FWD alltogether (use RWD & AWD), badge the RSX as a Honda (too boy-racy for Acura), and develope a world-class v8 for use in their more upscale sedans. Even the NSX could definitly use a highly tuned variation of this v8.

daloyal1 will become famous soon enough
well this is very true but honda is generaly known for making well rounded cars at a reasonable price.toyotas lexus tip the scale of a higher price than the rl on most of their cars.they are taking a few steps forward with sh-awd and giving acuras more power but i aslo think they should give their honda brand a car with awd or at least rwd thats not a sports car.
as for looks japanese car makers have always walked to the beat of a different drum. and your right i would pick a beamer over a honda because of looks but not a mercedes or audi.

i'm all for the awd movement. but i still think it would be nice for honda/acura to offer rwd on some of their cars, with an option for the awd. and i still believe that they need to offer a v8 (at least as an option), just for variety. for instance, as nice as the new awd rl is, i wish it would have offered a v8 for no other reason than to further differentiate itself from the tl. i know the rl looks different and has awd, but the two cars don't stand too far apart from each other, in my mind. esecially to justify the price difference, and since i'm sure it's just a matter of time before they offer awd on the tl as well.

Most people who buy a luxury car will automatically (unintended pun ) tick the automatic gearbox option box.

dat V8 is not worth it for honda to make.. its gonna be a low volume seller..unless honda image change from a gas sipper to a gas guzzler companies... and if u know by now honda love to be diff.. yeah..V6 dat can compete with V8. 4 cyl dat is more efficient than diesels. just when everyone thought 4 cyl cant get any better... honda change that. same like mazda didnt give up rotary. and the american companies didnt give up their V8s and italian keep making V12s...

i think acura has really worked hard at trying to change its image the last 2 years. look at the rsx, TSX, TL, and now RL.

all they have to do is add RWD and maybe a V8. then they are set. haha

to me the acura brand is more youth minded. the lexus is more for old guys.
