While we here in the U.S. enjoy the standard M-series cars as much as car nuts anywhere else, it turns out we’re soon to get an interesting service of BMW’s M Division - its Individual program. Launched at the Geneva Auto Show in 1992, the Individual program offers extreme personalizationBMW Individual logo pr photo of your new BMW, including such custom features as exotic paint schemes, a variety of leather upholstery, antique wood trim, DVD players, photocopiers, minifridges - almost anything you can imagine, all covered by a full factory warranty.
The Individual program is offered in Europe and Asia across the full range of BMWs. According to Fast Company and others, the Individual program is coming to the U.S. market, as soon as they can streamline the ordering process throught the dealer network.
In Europe, Individual is broken down into different levels of customization, ranging from special edition cars in production runs of 5 to 1,000, through personalized cars (like the 650i cab pictured) built right on the flexible M-series production line, all the way to full custom special commissions for customers for whom money is no object.
After all, why should the aftermarket tuners have all the fun?

This is for the high rollers that dig exclusivty and don't give a shit about financing or affordability . They got the extra $$ to spend and BMW is allowing them to apply their personal touch to their Bimmers with the support of a factory warranty.
I don't think this will be really popular with the more middle-classed 3-series crowd, but i do see this being popular on the high dollar bimmers like the 6 and 7series whose owners have the extra $$.
Exactly what 5.0 said, these guys are getting into the market that Unique Autosports and 310 Motoring have proven to be very profitable. Good luck to BMW, it will take some pretty impressive margins to make this program worthwhile in the US.

what irks me in this country is how readily many of these shops like unique MOTORSPORTS uses a name with MOTORSPORTS or AUTOSPORTS or RACING or... you get the idea... when they have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with their name!
These shops do nothing but cater to the dub, bling, stereo crowd...

This isnt just in the nyc area. Its everywhere all across the country. I've seen many places that have motorsport in the name and all they sell is alteezas, and shit like that and dont sell engine parts or the such. Even certain autosport places dont even sell suspension parts or stuff like that they sell radios and lights and rims (big chrome ones). To each their own you know. Back on topic. I'm surprised it took BMW this long to start doing this. Everybody knows its damn expensive to work on a bmw to make it a lil more personal and bmw should have known that those with money will spend it to make theirs stand out and look better and perform better. What I don't understand is why it took them this long to realize "Hey all that money that the guy with an m3 is spending over there for a wing or lipkit or whatever, he should be spending here with us."

it does suck. i'd like to start a performance shop but i'm staying away from selling big rims and funny lights so i have to figure out where the bread and butter for the organization will come from.

you guys talk about this "Motorsports" thing like it's only happened recently. maybe it's because i grew up on the west coast (doubt it though), but i've been seeing that kind of stuff for a long time.

I grew up in southern cali too, what I noticed was that yes, this type of thing has been around for a while, but it's only recently been glamorized on tv. On the same note, there are still only a handful of reputable performance shops in southern california (rage racing, one, hookups, road//race, brothers performance, etc.) and a much larger number of rim/"performance"/lighting shops.

well i actually grew up in northern california, but i noticed the same exact thing. lots of "Motorsports" places that were actually used car dealerships.
hell even in Oklahoma i noticed that a lot. the one consulation there being that the ones i saw in Oklahoma mostly sold used 'vettes and luxury sport sedans and coupes. i remember driving by one of them and seeing a whole line of C5s, followed by a line of IS300s. it was pretty cool!
