Dodge won’t get all the muscle car buzz with its Challenger concept at the Detroit auto show this January. Word is General Motors will show a Camaro concept on a stretched Kappa (Solstice, Sky) chassis. The car is set for production as a 2009 model, sources say.
The other GM concept for Detroit won’t be a Pontiac Firebird, but more likely will be a Buick crossover.
I knew a camaro concept would be at detroit this year, and i knew that production would be slated for the end of this decade, but the concept car being built off a stretched kappa platform is news to me. Kappa is a great platform. But I don't know if this platform is just being used for the conceptcar only, or if there are production plans for this stretched kappa. Word going around points to it being used for the concept only, and the production version using a different platform.
i would love a new camaro. i hope they give it some big engine options. but most importantly, i hope they dont screw it up. i cant wait til i get my car and driver and mph magazine after the auto show cuz theres gunna be some cool stuff.

I think we'll see these two engine for sure.
* 240hp 3.9L VVT OHV v6. Base engine
*390-400hp 6.0L Ls2 v8. z28 and/or SS
We might see a 320-330hp 5.3L Ls4 tossed in somewhere in the middle. GM does need more engine variety. In the 4th gens, it was only one v6 and one v8. Vs the mustang that had like one v6 and three different v8's.
I hope this time around, they really set the z28 and SS apart. In the 4th gens, performance between the two was nearly identical.
Mods: A pair of angel wings and 2 cans of red bull... Mighty fast!
Why they use the term kappa? Can anybody enligthened me on this one please... Because what I know, Kappa is a mythical frog like creature of Japanese lore.

That is the Kappa I know.
I'm not up to date on Japanese lore, but the word Kappa goes back to Greek times, it was the 10th letter in the Greek alphabet.
In fact, GM has several platforms named after letters in the Greek alphabet: Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Sigma, Theta, Lambda and Kappa. However, I hear they are going to stop using Greek alphabet name for platforms next year.

What about torque figures on the V6? The 3.9L V6 horsepower number seems weak for such a big engine, especially with cam phasing.
242lb-ft tq @ 4,400rpms which isn't that impressive either. That's less tq than Chryslers 3.5L, Mitsu's 3.8, Altima's 3.5 Vq, Hyundai's 3.8, and Honda's 3.5L.
It's an OHV though and that hurts it imo.
I love GM's OHV v8's cause they truelly are world class, but their OHV v6's are not impressive at all. Maybe it's time they made more use of the 3.6L Dohc they have in the premium Buicks and Cadillacs. That is a nice motor and it sucks that GM isn't making more use of it.

Less TQ than a smaller engine made by Honda : Now I have seen it all...
Now it's rumored to have a Zeta-light platform. I wonder what the corvette engine will be? I'm sure the production camaro will get the 400hp Ls2, but i'm wondering if they'll go for something more wild for the concept/showcar....something like the 505hp Ls7??
The part that has me worried is the naming part. A year ago, i thought this would be a possible issue. Hopefully, the name camaro is here to stay.

Chevrolet Show Car to Have "Zeta Light" Platform
Date posted: 11-29-2005
DETROIT — The sports car prototype that Chevrolet will unveil in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit will ride on General Motors' Zeta Light architecture and is almost certain to have a Corvette engine. GM would love to have a rear-wheel-drive coupe or 2+2 vehicle to challenge the Ford Mustang and forthcoming Dodge Challenger, and the prototype will show how GM thinks it should handle the matter. GM would also like its Mustang fighter to arrive as soon as possible.
Media are reporting that GM will call the prototype "Camaro," but supplier sources familiar with the automaker's plans say the vehicle might instead resurrect the Chevelle nameplate.
"All the magazines are assuming they're going to copy the '69 Camaro, and I think that's highly likely," a well-placed source told Inside Line. "But there's also a chance they could copy the '70 Chevelle, in which case they'll call it Chevelle."
Much of the naming issue also depends on the status of GM's agreement with the city of Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec, where the company used to build Camaros and Firebirds. GM agreed not to use the names Camaro and Firebird for a period of time following the discontinuation of those models.
But whatever its name, a rear-drive Chevy coupe off the Zeta Light platform is a done deal. Supplier sources say the first two Zeta Light offerings will be a sedan and a coupe, both from Chevrolet. The Zeta Light architecture is a version of GM's Zeta architecture, modified to take out cost and accommodate longer wheelbases. GM would price the Chevy coupe closer to the Mustang than the Corvette, giving it (most likely) a Corvette engine but leaving out the kind of sophisticated performance systems and upscale interior the Vette has.
I think we'll see these two engine for sure.

three diff V8's? Are you referring to the GT 260hp, the Mach I with 305hp and the 390hp Cobra? All three are 4.6L's

GT is a N/A Sohc 4.6, Mach 1 is a N/A Dohc 4.6, and Cobra is a Supercharged 4.6 Dohc.
I believe all 3 use different heads and components. Even the block might be different. I know the Cobra's internals are exclusive to it. For the most part, i see them as different motors even though they're from the same family.
