what i can't get over is the family sedan test they did. the accord came in first, the ford fusion in second and i forgot the rest. but the fusion second man ford really did work hard on that car.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.
:clap Yaaay for Honda! Getting the TSX and Accord up there is great! I too am surprised that the Civic didn't make that list. Maybe it will the next time around when the new SI is more out-and-about.

I just keep wondering how the Mazda RX-8 keeps getting on there when there are in fact, better performing cars in the same price range (Evo and STi).
the key is a balance. decent power, great engine, great handling without sacrificing ride quality, functional trunk and cargo space, slick shifting, quality build, novelty and looks. the evo/sti is fast but straight up brutal for daily driving. turbo and hood scoops don't make up for ride quality and fit and finish. plus the two extra real doors probably disqualify them.
the rx-8 is a graceful beast. quoting jeremy clarkson "the rx-8 is the easiest car to drive fast"

The Evo MR is far from brutal regarding daily driving it and does just as good of a job if not better than an RX-8. And I don't believe the RX-8 has decent power at all...
The RX-8 has pretty good power, not 300hp STi range, but whatever.
The point, however, is that these rankings are generally garbage. I'm glad to see my car on there (or the new model of it) and I'm glad to see other cars up there, but when it comes down to it, these rankings arent worth a pint of piss. They are the opinions of a few writers. I could get together with my friends and print a magazine with an annual 10 best ranking. So could you. Every test is the opinion of the writer. Some are better than others, but I REALLY dont like C&D.
I've got an RX-8, and it's the same thing. It's only 238 horsepower, but there's a lightness to the touch and to the feel of it. It is really, I think, one of the best. Both the RX-8 and the Miata are the best-balanced cars in the world. They just seem to fit exactly right. I think many experts will tell you, and I think this is something not many super car owners will admit, but I will admit, I think the Mazda's got the best gearbox of almost any car produced. It's extremely short, you never miss a gear. It's extremely predictable. Click click click. Click click click. And the fact that you use it a lot makes it enjoyable. You feel connected to the car.
I like everything about the RX-8 and would look into buying one in a couple months if it weren't for the one thing that makes it most special: the rotary engine.
Sure it's well-balanced and smooth and can be mounted low in the engine bay, but for me it takes a great all-around car and gives it poor gas mileage (actual owners rarely get 20mpg), regular oil consumption, what in my opinion is a nasty engine sound, and it's really not very fast at all IMO, not a whole lot quicker than even the new Miata. If they put a nice, powerful 6-cylinder in there with ~300hp I'd be sold so fast, even if the price went up a bit. But of course they never ever will because the whole idea behind the RX-anything is the rotary.

:eek :eek WHAT!!?? 20 MPG!!?? That's just scary!! My step bro wants to buy one, but because of its bad rep regarding oil (and fuel) consumption, heat build up, and the suspension problem... He bought a used Evo 8 instead, no better than the RX-8 in term of fuel consumption... But hey... Got boost?

You may be interested in this: Mazda is considering (and designing and engineering) what is esentially a piston-engined RX-8. Obviously it will be sold under a different name, but it may get a V6 or the turbo 2.3L 4cyl out of the Mazdaspeed6. Either way it should be pretty cool.
Rotaries are a love it or hate it motor. The gas mileage is poor due to the need (and love) to rev, and oil is injected in order to lubricate the internal seals, so it's not really a problem as much as the nature of the motor.
