Chrysler to Build 300C in Europe
Chrysler will begin building its hot-selling Chrysler 300C sedan in Graz, Austria, early next year, The Detroit News reported.
The 300C and a wagon version known as the 300C Touring, to be sold only overseas, will be produced by Magna Steyr, a unit of Canadian auto supplier Magna International, in Austria, the story said. The move by Chrysler will lighten the load at its Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant, which has struggled to keep up with demand for the 300.
Magna Steyr will assemble the various versions of the Chrysler 300C Touring and Sedan, including: left- and right-hand drive versions; a high-performance version, the SRT-8, and a diesel-powered model that will launch in late 2005.
Chrysler hopes the move will give it a "bigger toehold" in western Europe, where it is hoping to increase sales, the story said, citing sources familiar with the plan. Chrysler wants to increase its market share in western Europe to 1 percent within four years, from 0.7 percent today.
The two-model Chrysler 300 lineup is expected to reach combined annual sales of 8,000 units in 2005 in Europe.
