Ford Motor released this design rendering of the 2007 Ford Edge today in the run-up to the 2006 North American International Auto Show in January.
Peter Horbury Ford DesignThe resemblance to the Ford Fusion is striking, and far from accidental. According to Peter Horbury, Ford’s executive director of North America Design (at right), “Much like Fusion has done for the mid-size sedan, the new Ford Edge will inject a healthy dose of American design and personality into the hot crossover market.” Looks like we can expect to see a lot of “Fusion design” in Ford’s new models.
As reported earlier, the Edge will be powered by Ford’s 3.5-liter V6, through the new 6-speed automatic transmission. The Edge goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2006

Drawing. Hopefully the actual product will look as good or near as good as the drawing.
It seems as though Ford has been stepping it up as of late. I thought they would be the first of the big three to bomb out too. Hope the actual truck looks like that with a good amount of power!! It looks to me like that should be in the lincoln line up more than fords.
Yes Ford is steping it up, sales of crossovers are growing while SUV sales are shrinking. I heard that even the Freestyle that was a slow seller and slated for an early death are selling well.

The last 3 months, crossover based vehicles like these have actually outsold SUV's :eek. Crazy.
Freestyle early death? that's quick. it just came out. Maybe this Edge is the replacement, but the edge looks smaller. I think the Freestyle will have a new lease on life when the new 250hp 3.5 and 6spd auto are introduced and the front end given a facelift. Right now, the problem is that it is too bland looking and underpowered...hopefully that's something the new 3.5 duratec and a refresh will address.
I too am begining to like Ford's new lineup of cars. Still a bit ways from having the draw Honda does, but a definite big step in the right direction.
I just watched topgear last night on my PC and they were testing the new European Ford Focus ST. Wow. That needs to be our new focus. Blows any focus we have here away.
Gonna be interesting in the Detroit news this morning they had another article on the crossover vs SUV sales. GM is banking on it's new full size SUV's. I think they are again a step behind. Ford seems to get it and is rolling out crossovers.
Ford Motor Co. is bracing for further declines in sales of large sport utility vehicles, already down 18 percent this year, as aging baby boomers opt increasingly for the smoother ride and handling of car-based crossovers.
But General Motors Corp., which is counting on the rollout of large SUVs next year to help boost sales and profits, has a more optimistic outlook, predicting stable demand in coming years.
"We have new product coming to the market that will provide stimulus," said Paul Ballew, executive director for market and industry analysis at GM. "We're being conservative, assuming the market will be flat but we'll gain in share."
I don't think GM gets it I guess they're looking for the "new model bump" but so they get a years sales boost in a shrinking segment. They better have crossovers in the pipe because they might be the next big thing.
