Gas prices forcing SUV owners to think twice (DUH!)...

The article is one of many around the U.S. about the gluttonous SUV loving Americans finally realizing what some of us have known for a LONG time. It's a good read though with interesting citations.

$80 at the pump, multiple times per week is just not reasonable.. especially when you don't NEED that much space in an automobile. Get a Fit or Cooper and call it a day, folks.

people are just stupid, honestly...

many american drivers lived through the 70s...

did they forget what the hell happened then?

no, they just kept getting bigger and bigger, heavier and heavier monstrosities because they "needed" them...

same thing with houses... who the hell needs a 6 bedroom house when only you or your wife live there?

we don't think practically, but that is the american dream...

buy what you can because you can...

lol....i love it. im on a local racing forum in my area, and i have a field day with the V8 guys. we all meet a twice a month and go out and eat. and none of them bring their cars. they all drive their "gas savers" cause they cant afford to drive their 10mpg V8s.
good stuff. im running low 13s and still rocking low-mid 30s a gallon.

me and a few buddies have a saying, "spanking that ass, using half the gas"

that may be taking things a little too out of context...

as a daily driver/only car, it makes absolutely NO SENSE WHATSOEVER to choose a vehicle the size of a caddy escalade/hummer anything...

when the majority of people a: never use the full capacity of seats/space, have nothing to tow, commute long distances, never really need the 4wd as most roads are plowed when it snows, etc etc etc...

it's okay to have a toy car, like a muscle car that drinks as much fuel as you want... it's a toy after all...

it's these idiots who buy huge cars/trucks that serve no better purpose other than to take up valuable space on the roads and impede my vision of what's going on ahead that i take issue with...

seriously - how many times do you see a tiny little girl, climb out of her ford expedition, only to get a cup of coffee at a starbucks?

i do quite alright for myself with 106 hp and 2200 lb civic that gets 35 mpg, even in traffic...

Yeah... this short guy(no offense to short people) I used to work with bought himself a Ford Expedition, just because he thought he was the shit. He only drove the thing to work and to the clubs and stuff. The only off-roading he did was over the curbs in the parking lot.

A lot of people think SUV = space for lots of crap but, truth be told, I've shoved more crap into mini-vans than an SUV could ever fit. Mini-vans, for the most part, get decent mileage too since they're usually powered by fours and sixes. SUVs just make NO sense for most people in most urban and suburban places unless they're running a business or constantly needing the utility/power.

that may be, but you knew what you were getting into before you got the truck, as far as gas consumption is concerned, right?

i just find it funny that those people who are totally oblivious complain/wonder why their truck/suv/van sucks up so much gas...

seriously, i was talking to a woman the other day and she wondered why she was spending so much money on her pathfinder, while i spent so little on my civic...

4.00 per gallon no matter how you add it up fucking sucks!!! With that being said, I'm due for a new car next month (my lease is up) but gas isn't going to be a factor in what I pick. Shits gonna cost a lot to fill regardless. Its ridiculous, but what can you do??!! They got us by the balls!!!

As far as people driving SUV's.... Some people do have families that they need to cart around, and others like SUVs for their size and "safety" as far as how it'll hold up in crash vs some small can opener. To each their own.

this was actually studied in depth by aaa...

apparently, it's not how big an suv is... it's how the car overall is engineered... and those big suvs are not very good at absorbing impacts of crashes compared to some well designed smaller cars... a smart was in an accident with a friggin box truck and the driver simply got out uninjured... though that may not always be the case...

the problem is perception...

i want to have a jdm van (mazda5/premacy, or odyssee, stream)...
4 cylinders, relatively lightweight, absolutely fun to drive and able to carry a whole bunch of stuff and 4 people very comfortably, assuming they are average asian sized, which my family is...

but according to perception here, i'd be thought of as a soccer mom...
???

if anything, it looks more foolish driving around in a hummer/escalade/expedition/etc... on 24" blinga blings, having to come to a complete stop to navigate a tiny speedbump, and alone with only a latte and talking on a cell phone wearing those ridiculously large sunglasses that seem to be in vogue nowadays...

anyone who has spent any significant time outside of the usa would know that we still have among the cheapest gas in the world...

think about it this way...

even when our gas was still cheap at ~ $1, europe and japan (ie: all other industrialized countries) were spending a hell of a lot more... germany was about $7 a gallon in the 90's, i believe... japan was paying about $4-6...

now, you go to a third world country where you'd be lucky to EARN $5 a WEEK... and the gas in that economy was still roughly $1-3 a gallon...

we're VERY fortunate that gas in our own country isn't anywhere near that expensive comparatively...

can someone
