The redesigned Hyundai Sonata will go on sale in March in the United States with a bigger optional V6, the company said here last week.
The engine will displace 3.3 liters vs. 2.7 liters in the current model.
The base inline-four engine, a new powerplant developed by Hyundai Motor Co., Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and DaimlerChrysler AG, will stay at 2.4 liters.
"Hyundai has already started trial production (in early June) of the Sonata in the Alabama plant by assembling two or three Sonatas a day," said CEO Kim Dong Jin. "Hyundai will produce a total of 300,000 units of the Sonata and Santa Fe SUV a year in the Alabama plant." The new plant is in Montgomery, Ala.
In 2003, the company sold 183,608 units of the two vehicles in the United States - 82,330 Sonatas and 101,278 Santa Fes.
Hyundai expects the Sonata to challenge the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord in the heart of the mid-sized car market. "We have benchmarked Camry and Accord for the Sonata's design, cabin size, performance and interior," said Hyundai Motor spokesman Oles Gadacz.
The company will launch the redesigned Sonata in Europe in November. It will be shipped from South Korea. A diesel engine is planned for Europe in 2006, Gadacz said.
In South Korea, Hyundai will offer two inline-four engines, 2.0 liters and 2.4 liters.

Camry 3.3L 225 Bhp is nothing to be scared off... Mitsu is weak so they make the largest engine V6 can allow... That VQ though, is one engine from hell, love the torque.

The camry's 225hp doesn't scare me, its the 240lb/ft of torque it makes, which is almost 30lb/ft more than the accord's V6, and only a few less than both the altima and the galant. toyota V6's have always made more torque than horsepower, my dad's solora convertible has the 3.3L in it, and it feels pretty damn quick even thought the car weighs over to 3500lbs and considering the SEV6 sedan weighs about 200lbs less, i bet its no slouch. I will admit the VQ is a great engine, my mom had one in here old maxima, albiet it only had 190hp at the time. I just wish that the cars it's in where built to match it.

And thats on a fully loaded SLE converible like my dad's.
So if the sedan is lighter it should be faster, depending on the gearing of the automatic.
Which puts the SE sedan around the same mark as the altima, accord, and galant V6/auto.
Like I said this is with the SE sedan only, the LE and XLE come with the smaller 3.0L V6.

Well kind of bit off topic, but does VVT-i is has better torque than VTEC or i-VTEC?
Well its all in the tuning, its obvious that honda's system sacrfices a little torque for much more high end HP, lets not forget that the SE camry's V6 does have .3 L more displacement. Perfect example is toyota's truck engines,
4.7L V8
235hp / 320lb/ft
4.0 V6
245hp / 282lb/ft
Thats right, even with .7L more displacement the V8 makes 10HP less but much more torque. To me it seems that toyota believes that a vehicle which feels quicker off the line is better than one that fells faster when the tack needle approaches redline, different ways of approaching power delivery.

Nah you guys are wrong with the ***** and VVT-I they are different things all together, The toyota system is just Variable Valve Timing with Injection while ***** is Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control this means the valve changies the distace it travels when it reaches the set pressure. the Toyota system with the same type of technology is the VVT-iL Variable Valve Timing and Lift control like the Celica has and MR2
