That noise you hear from California is burbling from the quad exhaust outlets of Pontiac’s hottest Grand Prix in nearly two decades—the 2005 Grand Prix GXP. The GXP’s 5.3-liter, 290-hp, 325-lb-ft V8 is Grand Prix’s first V8 since 1987.
So why did The General premier this new muscle at the California International Auto Show in Anaheim? It must be that eco-friendly fuel-sipping “Displacement on Demand” technology hidden under the GXP’s hood. DOD cuts off four cylinders during low-load conditions, improving the performance sedan’s fuel economy by an estimated 12 percent.
GXP goes on sale next spring, priced slightly higher than the 2004 Grand Prix Comp G’s $28,700 base price. Look for more on Pontiac’s GXP plans in next week’s AutoWeek.
