Over the years, Detroit has been the home of popular roadside signs tallying annual auto production minute by minute.
Now, Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. has its own billboard tally going: The gallons of gasoline saved by Americans driving Toyota's gas-electric hybrid vehicles.
Toyota's newly erected billboard on Interstate 405 in Southern California will hit 100 million gallons sometime Monday.
Ernest Bastien, vice president of the company's vehicle operations group, said the idea came from an ad agency working with Toyota.
The fuel savings is an estimate, based on all Toyota hybrids sold since the Prius debuted in the United States in 2000, spokeswoman Nancy Hubbell said.
The billboard is updated constantly to account for new sales as well as the average daily miles traveled per vehicle and a calculation of the fuel saved over a conventional vehicle.
Why is the billboard in California? Toyota sells one out of every three Priuses there, and the state has the most hybrid vehicles on its roads.
The cost for hybrids are still too high to make them worth while. You would have to drive a hybrid around 150,000 miles before you would recover the premium you pay for a hybrid compared to a conventional car.

And by then, the depreciation and cost of a replacement battery pack (parts to the tune of $2800, and labor of roughly another $1500) makes that money-saving goal ever farther away...

"In terms of enjoyment, the car was almost completely bankrupt."

Wow love to look at only the negative huh? Lets take a look at another hybrid. The Lexus RX 400h gets 31/27. It's closest competitors the Infinit FX 45 and Cadillac SRX similarly optioned will go for over 50k. The RX 400h is right at 50k. The inifiniti gets 15/19 and I can't find the mpg of the caddy on their website but I'm sure it's similar to the infiniti's. Don't feel like doing the math there but I'm sure that will make a big difference. BTW I compare it to the v8 since it get similar 1/4 mile times and all 3 are luxury suvs with similar prices.
So the prius can't get civic/corolla/focus gas mileage value. Actually I believe the prius is midsize so you should compare it to accord or camry. Then again it does slower then compact car acceleration. So the 2nd gen prius monetary value isn't as high as everyone expected but many who buy the car also hold value in the statement it makes to the world. And I'm sure most are plently happy with the purchase.

To each their own. I got a coworker that looks at a car as only an appliance to get around in. I think most of us here don't think that way. To me a Prius is a car devoid of anything that makes driving fun. Add to that the higher price of entry and the long payback period and what's really to love. Most of us drive around 12K a year so an extra 2K is gonna take a long time to pay back.

Dude the site smooches toyotas butt till the break of dawn, those people didnt like the prius and the mileage sucked. I think hybrids just need to go away, the 06 civic gets 40 mpg and has actual acceleration.
They only have the big woo haa they do becuase of the media. If no news reported about these things and they were sat on the lot as just another they would not sell any.

Nowadays, there's hybrid & electric. There's still some debatable issues about the better consumption in terms of gas.
