i have a stock b20 and i want to just give it a little something. what can i do to the top end with out going vtec. port polish? cam gears?? what kind of hp/torque gain can i expect?
Depending on the parts you choose (mostly how radical of a cam setup you choose), you can expect anywhere from a 15 - 40whp gain.
You need to do a bunch of research on all those parts, and figure out which styles, types, and specs you should go with. Port & Polish won't help you much.
Also do a bit of a cost/benefit analysis and figure out if the cost of the parts plus install, plus tuning is worth it to you for the power you will gain.

VTEC: Leave it to Honda to give you turbo lag without the turbo
Yea I'm running a GSR head to my B20 block and its the greatest thing I could have done (short of a real turbo kit). Great gains there, but even greater if I had a manual tranny.
Outside of that, the bolt-ons and internals will all prolly run you a couple grand, maybe less if you leave the motor apart to do them all at the same time or if you can do them yourself.

If any of those were available to me I might have gone that route. Cams will come in the future along with valves and pistons. I think at the end of the year I'll start really build up the engine.
cause some people like to have power over the entire rev range - not just when vtec kicks in - why on earth would you ever want a delay in power to the wheels.

someone around here says "only honda can give you lag without the turbo, it's called vtec" or something to that nature. something to think about. credit goes to the person i quoted.
build a non-vtec head matched with cams then go spank the crap out of everyone who is still running vtec cause they think its fast.
maybe im in the minority on a honda forum...but vtec does not suck and on my car im in vtec so fast you can barely feel it kick it in. you wouldnt be able to tell if you couldnt hear it

vtec is a good thing, it really is. but it's not "the shit" it sounds great when it kicks in for that .5 second. but i don't think it's a huge advantage

you can see someone stole my vtec outta my b18a and i do fine without it

what if you never felt vtec kick in cause you were making more power earlier in the power band. you would be faster. your car would have more down low HP and TQ, something a honda REALLY NEEDS
Id go with a cold air intake and header and leave it at that. Then I would wrap the header, I wrapped my header, made a big difference, where I usually got a lot of heat soak in my uintake, now the motor feels likle it "retains" a bit more power. not much, but every little bit helps.
On my little single cam 1.5 Id say I gained 5 or 10 whp after boltons. Id imagine the head design and bore of teh B20 would see more improvement with the boltons though.
A tune allong with boltons could net you around 15 whp if you had a good header.
