With decent All-sesons like BFG Traction T/A's how good is a 5-speed CRV in 4-8 inches of snow in hilly terrain.

About 7" or so. There were no problems at all getting it to move with 8/32"-treaded all-seasons; the CR-V is great for use in snow. I'm located around the Appalachian mountains as well, so there is a lot of hilly terrain (not as much as the Rockies, but nowhere close to flat).
As with any vehicle in snowy/icy conditions though, stopping is another story - which is why I recommend the snow tires. You can't rely on the ABS at all, so keep speeds low and make inputs smooth and early.
Sweet, I am thinking of a cute ute for a replacement for my wifes Civic.

Do they have STUDDED tires down there in the lower 48's? Up here in Alaska you can get studded tires for the winter. They are supposed to help you a lot more when dealing with frozen streets and what not. I don't really think it matters though, but others believe in them whole heartedly
Thanks for it.... i have a 00' crv.sounds ,like ur bout to bounce off the rev limiter and REVOs are much "grippier". The harmonys are ... funny You could still do all this with snows but they would wear much faster.
