2.2 CL overheating?...?

in my girlfriend's 2.2 CL, whenever she idles her car the temperature gauge goes all the way up, but when she drives, it's ok, and drops back down...this only started happening lately..then i checked the coolant in the radiator and the reserve and they were both empty. i just bought coolant and put it in this morning.. she drove to work, but i haven't talked to her about it yet. has this happened to anyone? thanks.

First off if she overheats the car you can just about kiss the engine bye, or it will have serious damge non the less. BUt now for the coolant loss, cars dont just lose coolant especially that much, there has to be a leak somewhere if she is losing that much coolant, also if its just overheating at an idle one or both fans are not turning on whether it be a relay or just a bad motor. Without actually looking at teh car i couldnt tell you what is happening if you dont feel capable of fixing the problem then take it to the DEALER!! Dont take it to a shop, they use aftermarket parts that dont last as long or are just cheap, and most technicians at those shops are hacks, the dealer as factory trained techs and OEM parts which are best for her car, trust me ive been through this with my car its no fun when you spend thousands on the same problem!!
