The DualShock Effect: Sony to Cease Sixaxis Production
The DualShock Effect: Sony to Cease Sixaxis Production
Bye, bye Sixaxis - we hardly knew ye. In a few more months the DualShock 3 will have completely replaced the Sixaxis controller as the defacto standard on PS3.
Posted by James Brightman on Wednesday, April 02, 2008
After they announced the release of the new DualShock 3 controller this week, Sony Computer Entertainment America confirmed to MTV Multiplayer that the PS3's current Sixaxis controller is indeed being phased out.
"Sixaxis will no longer be offered after it's completely sold through at retail (likely by the summer timeframe)," an SCEA representative said.
GameDaily BIZ would assume this would also mean that SCEA will start including the DualShock 3 in their 40GB and 80GB PS3 SKUs at retail. The new rumble-enabled controller will come packed in with the special Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle in June.
We've pinged SCEA to confirm. We also inquired whether consumers who are about to purchase a new PS3 right now might be offered a rebate or trade-up offer to replace the soon-to-be-defunct Sixaxis.

This is good news for me. I don't miss the vibe function so, I'll hopefully be picking up discount Sixaxis controllers in the near future.

I still recommend you get one. I turn the vibration off, battery life is GREATLY improved over the sixaxis, and the connection stability is amazing.

I appreciate the recommendation and that's good news on the connection and batt life however, UT3 + GT5P + GTAIV + MGS:GOTP + LBP = sad debit card. Frankly, I'm completely satisfied with the sixaxis battery life and have had no issues with connection so, I'm just gonna do the el cheapo thing.

I hear you mean, the good news is that the DS3 will be available for the next 5 years, so there's no rush :P

Sucks that us current owners will have to shell out another $55 for a DS3.

At least you don't have to shell out cash for batteries or play and charge kits.
Hell, those are more than a 1/3rd of the price of a new controller alone.
