Do you have all your updates?
Once you update, it should auto switch to Analog mode, if it doesn't, here's what you can do.
Just start the game, then hold the "PS" button, and switch it manually to analog mode. Problem solved and the game will play fine
Enjoy.

for me, not really. my brother (who has better eyes than me) says that it looks more blurry i'm running it through the hdmi cable though. so maybe the hdmi doesn't do well w/ standard definition?

PS2 games over HDMI connectors look "worse" because of what needs to be done in order to ensure full compatibility.
Basically, not all TV's accept 480i over HDMI, so what Sony does is take the 480i signal, and "double" the lines, basically creating a 480p signal. This "upscaling" looks terrible, simply because instead of de-interlacing the signal, Sony simply doubled every line of resolution for every interlaced half of a frame...so it looks terribly "blurry" and "jagged".
Over Composite, S-Video, and occasionally even Component looks significantly better. Games that use Progresssive scan get rid of this problem, and the problem is not consistent with all games.
Nations - I like the controller, it's light, and easy to use, which is important IMO for a wireless controller. Especially if you're going to be moving it around (try motorstorm for instance). If I'm going to play games for long periods of time that need motion, lighter is better.

can you have both the hdmi and regular analog outputs connected at the same time? then just pick which input to use on the TV?

You'll have to switch it on the PS3 (i.e. go into your display options and switch from HDMI to component or composite). But, yes, you can.
