Japan Gets Three Metal Gear Packs They always have to top us.
by IGN Staff
February 27, 2008 - We were all bubbly following the news that in addition to a standard version of Metal Gear Solid 4, Konami would be releasing the game here in America as part of a PlayStation 3 bundle packed in a special Old Snake-themed box.
Then we learned what Japan will be getting to commemorate the game, due out over there in early June, and the bubbles sorta went away.
The latest issue of Famitsu reports that Konami will be commemorating the Japanese release of MGS4 with three packages. The game's base pack includes MGS4 and Metal Gear Online. But real fans of the sneak will want to pick up the Special Edition box set, which includes a Blu-ray disc featuring all the trailers released so far along with making-of footage. Finally, there's the premium pack, which will include everything in the Special Edition version along with a PlayStation 3 unit.
In America, the PS3 unit to be bundled with MGS4 has been confirmed as the current 80 gigabyte model with a Dual Shock 3 controller thrown in. Famitsu referred to the hardware that's set to be bundled with the Japanese version as a "special model," but said that it couldn't reveal the color. Konami will give out the details on March 21, according to the magazine.
It's worth noting that the 80 gigabyte PS3 was never released in Japan. Is this just Konami making a big fuss over the Japanese release of the previously unavailable model through the MGS4 pack? Or can we look forward to a completely new color? We'll find out in late March!
As for the bonus goodies that are set to be included in the Japanese Special Edition, we wouldn't be too surprised if they ended up coming our way as well, possibly in the form of an unannounced limited edition. We'll have to wait for official announcement from Konami.

Slightly unrelated... your sig makes sense after this article :-p.
I would like to see something special like the GTA4 Limited Edition bundles but, at that point, I'd already have a lock box and whatever the hell else....
... Maybe some of the Snakes active cammo could be bundled!
Mods: JDM H22a Swap, Greddy SS Header, Greddy SP Cat Back, Car Sound highflow Cat, Skunk2 Cam gears (tuned), Light weight Flywheel, AEM CAI and Short Ram (I switch for different things). ON THE WAY: JUN Valve Train, Jun High Comp Pistons and JUN Flywheel
I'm fairly certain that there are only 2 different packs of MGS4, Regular and Special, however, there will be a special edition Bundle in Japan, that may include a white 80GB.
In the US, our pack in will be the standard edition, instead of the special edition like Japan.

Konami?... Are you listening?
Yeah, I didn't notice that before...
My sig was originally from a discussion on why the trans top for the del Sol was never an option in the U.S., but I suppose it applies to this situation as well. It is true after all!

I'm going total OT on this one and I do apologize for it but, it really doesn't make sense that we didn't get the trans top. The rest of the world sees us as lazy... we would be the perfect market for it under that stereotype. Oh well, I suppose. We do rock pretty hard.
I'm gonna be envious if we get some cool custom MGS PS3 like a Solid Snake gray color or something. It still wont be enough to make me get rid of my 60Gigger though.
On the other hand... my father wants a Blu-Ray player when he gets his TV... Maybe I can convince him to get the bundle, assuming it's something more than just a black PS3

That's a good point. Besides that I simply don't understand why Honda wouldn't make the trans top on option in the U.S. if it were an option not only in Japan, but also in Europe.
The only kicker is I'm not sure if I would actually want one... Someone told me they weigh an extra 400 lbs. Not sure if that is true, but I could definitely imagine them weighing in at 200 lbs...
So yeah, it sucks if Sony does the same thing with the PS3, but what can ya do? One thing I give Sony credit for: they released the PS3 in the U.S. before Japan, that's what I'm talkin' 'bout.

The PS3 launched in Japan a few days before it launched in the US.
Also, I'm just putting this out there, but history has proven that 'special edition consoles' simply don't sell well in the US. Not consoles, handhelds, yes, but not consoles.
Anyone remember the 'Pokemon edition N64'? Worse selling model of the 64. Halo 3 Edition 360? They still have them in stock, and IIRC, MS stopped making them in January.
The Halo 2 Xbox was the same, did not perform well.
They have reasons for not releasing these systems in the US, it's because they typically don't sell well. Meanwhile, in Japan, they can sell a $200 FFX special edition that is loaded with ridiculous extras that just wouldn't float in the US.
