This damned thing is such a tease though. Knowing you have access to the beta and not being able to play it till late in the month... it's just not fair.

You think you've got it bad...
My PS3 was killed by a 3 year old toddler. I have to send it to Sony to get it fixed

You just have to pre-order MGS4 at your local GameStop. They actually called, like they do when your pre-order comes in, to let me know that the bonus pre-order incentive thingy was in and to get it while supplies last.

That sucks dude. Hopefully you get it back soon. Not sure whether you're picking GTAIV up for PS or XB but, if I was getting it on my PS and it was getting fixed, I would go insane.

Well, the worst part is I leave for Oklahoma on the 15th for 4 months to train some Combat Aviation Brigades. I'll be taking my 360 with me now, but I had planned to take my PS3 since it has more games coming out between now and August.
Hopefully I can have it sent to me or come pick it up, I just don't want to miss out on the MGO beta. I may end up buying a 40GB unit just to play it, then maybe I'll give it to my brother, lol.

Damn, you got it like that? Color me green. There was some controversy recently about whether MGO was going to be included in MGSIV or if it would be its own game... Do you know which it is just yet?

MGO will be with MGS4, however, it will only be a 'basic pack'. There will be a stand alone game released at a later date.
And yea, while I'm not swimming in pools of money or wiping my ass with thousands of dollars, I try to have a little bit of 'play' money. The only thing is, if I get the 40GB, that cuts into the new Surround sound money...but, honestly, I really don't want to miss out on the MGO Beta, the possible Home Beta, GT5: P (finally racing against people on NA servers) and GTA IV.

I thought you said it was hardware failure?
Either way, that sucks dude, hopefully you find a quick solution so you don't miss out on anything.
To the OP: I was planning on getting the game at Best Buy so I could get a discount... but do you have to reserve at GameStop specifically to get the beta?

That's what I thought too.
My girlfriend was babysitting for a friend, I was at work. She told me (the day after I posted on NeoGAF) that the kid she was babysitting kept turning the PS3 on and off. So, I decided to just give it a good cleaning, dust it out, etc...then my GF told me more.
What I think caused the system to fail was that she put a towel over it (so the kid would leave it alone), and apparently it was still on.
Win.

Oh God... well I'm sorry about that.
Hopefully the toddler has deep pockets, eh?
Or maybe he was trying the 'towel trick' on what he mistakenly thought was a 360.
If it were me, I would just pay to get the same one back. Yeah it sucks to shell out $$, but in turn you get to keep your 60GB (worth it, IMO). Any idea how long it would take Sony to fix?
