I've started playing on the "Easy" setting and the game is still pretty deep in it's gameplay.
It's a turn based strategy game, with each turn based around the seasons of the year. But to make it more era specific to feudel Japan, the designers named then such things as "Monsoon", "Harvest", etc.
You start out with a single fief and cultivate your lands and build up your military strength, while at the same time engaging in diplomacy, cultural events, spying/sabotage, and the sorts.
During a battle you posse up your military leaders and assign troops to each of them. These become the basis of your units on the battlefield. One might be armed with spears, bows, muskets, cannons, and other weapons.
One thing I found to be cumbersome is the control of specific units can get to be a little tiresome as the orders you can give them are not very numerous. Also it's easier to give the same order to your entire army so all of your units are issued the same command then it is to issue different tasks to each unit. Therefore intricate battle plans are very difficult to pull off. For sure a PC version where you can control your army via drag-n-clicking would be much appreciated.
Right now I'm up to 4 fiefs that are under my control. I'm building up my forces, but I'm still not a major player on the national map. Hopefully by tonight I'll have doubled my holdings!!
