Will edit this post later with a picture of my XMB.
Gotta do some of my own custom wallpapers later, but right now I'm just using an MGS one I got off of GAF.

First, you'll want to make sure your PS3 is updated to the latest firmware. To do this, you'll need to connect to your internet connection and run the system update from your cross media bar. The latest update is the one that grants wallpaper settings. After the PS3 is up to date, you can view a picture, press Triangle to access the image options and choose 'set as wallpaper'. At this point, the PS3 will guide you through some configuration of how you want the picture to sit(zoom and whatever). Apply and you're good to go.
I'll edit this post with my XMB in a few moments.
Edit***
Click the image for the full size. Trying to keep it friendly for the 56kers

The wallpaper is still a work in progress but, that's what I have up thus far.
Edit x2***
The TV is a 32" Vizio LCD HDTV. Doesn't quite make it up to 1080p but, it's plenty for me.

Does the ps3 have to be connected to a computer for you to use the wallpapers? My dad and I tried to change his the other night on his ps3 and it wouldnt allow us but I couldnt remember what the message it gave was.

Negative, the only things you have to do are:
1) Update firmware to 1.90
2) Find image, open image, hit triangle, select 'set as wallpaper'.
There's a big thread on NeoGAF with tons of wallpapers, check it out.
