Report: PS3 Users Watching More Blu-ray Movies

Report: PS3 Users Watching More Blu-ray Movies
According to research presented by Warner Home Video President Ron Sanders, users are watching and buying more Blu-ray movies for the PS3 since the start of the new year.
Posted by David Radd on Thursday, May 01, 2008

A report by Screen Digest says that a recent survey from Warner Home Video found that more U.S. household are using their PS3's to play Blu-ray movies. PS3 users spent 15 percent of their console time devoted to Blu-ray movies in the last quarter of 2007, but spent 23 percent of their time during the first two months of 2008 doing the same activity. Additionally, households using the PS3 as a Blu-ray movie player increase from 53 percent in September 2007 to 80 percent in early 2008.

Still, Screen Digest had some doubts about the significance of the statistics: "The timing of the Warner research, which was carried out in late 2007 and early 2008, means it is impossible to quantify how much the usual Christmas gift-giving season (and subsequent increase in new BD homes) would have increased consumer spending on BDs without the promotions - or, indeed, whether the uplift is sustainable. Furthermore, the relative lack of strong games titles for the PS3 over this period is also likely to have contributed to the console's use as a BD player. Nonetheless, the sheer size of the PS3 installed base means that even a minimal increase in average per household BD buy rates could have a substantial impact on total hi-def software sales, a fact which played a major role in Warner's decision to abandon Toshiba's HD DVD format in favour of Blu-ray earlier this year."

It will only increase, IMO. I've generally experienced the PS3 user base to be a little older, which is likely due to it's high price. But there are tons of AV enthusiasts and other customers who have purchase one / recieved one free just to watch Blu-Ray movies.

I don't know, in time, I think it will continue to increase as more users gain access to HDTV's, then I expect a sharp decline once Blu-Ray players hit a reasonable price point.

Best Buy runs package deals all the time that include an HDTV and a Blu-ray player (the PS3 qualifies).

I personally made my first Blu-ray purchase just a few days ago. I Am Legends ftw.

Do you have Star Ways on Blu-ray?
