Sony continues the trend of bringing premium A/V versions of its consoles."Sony is mulling to create a version of the console that would appeal more to those wishing to use the PlayStation 3 not as a gaming machine on the first place, but as a primary video player. The “media-centric” PlayStation 3 will feature capabilities of consumer electronics devices and will be more focused on digital media content playback, rather than on gaming. Based on claims reportedly made by executives of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., PC Watch web-site reports that the PlayStation 3 “media-centric”-edition will feature anti-vibration mechanism on the Blu-ray disc drive, 512MB XDR memory, more advanced power supply unit and two HDMI connectors to divide audio and video data.

The third version of the PlayStation 3 will also have a new design that matches other consumer electronics products and is unlikely to be totally similar to the currently sold PlayStation 3 gaming machines. Still, all the games for the PlayStation 3 should play absolutely well on the device. Given that in the consumer electronics industry manufacturers do not subsidize hardware in hope to compensate their losses by selling many games, it is highly likely that the console, which currently costs $840 to manufacture, will be sold at a premium price. The Japanese web-site noted an executive at SCEI as saying that the price range could be from ¥200 to ¥300 thousand ($1680 to $2520)."

In the past Sony has released 'media-centric' versions of its consoles for a premium price. Although the market for such a device may be limited, it will be interesting to see if this machine offers any additional gaming benefits and whether or not the system is as mod-friendly as the current versions of the Playstation 3. Remember, you can install some versions of Linux and swap out the internal hard drive much more easily than you could with any other console ever released, so here's to hoping for continued tinkering with the PS3.

sony should be more concerned about getting more current PS3 units out and games to their customers than another version of PS3...

if they havent noticed they've fallen to third place...

Yeah the 360 has sold almost 10 million the Wii has sold over 4 million and the PS3 is just over 1 million.

well there isnt enough ps3...so its not the fact that they are not as good.

has nothing to do with the hardware... the hardware is great but they need to get more units out to customers and more importantly, get games out that people want... resistance is great and all but we need MORE games like that.

my local best buys have tons of ps3's on the shelves, there enough now, nobody wants them, i have the money to buy one but i choose not to, i'm gettin a wii =D

It's not that there are not enough, like others have said there are PS3s all over the place now. It's the price pure and simple.

Yes there is. They are sitting on the shelves right now. Price has something to do with it, but it wouldn't be the issue it currently is if Sony could get out more good software for the system. Then people would overlook the price tag.

lack of games, price, and lack of features are the main things.

Look at 360, I dont know if you guys saw microsofts presentation on CES this past weekend, but media center is evolving, xbox live is evolving to the point you will be able to play online with vista and 360 against eachother. Also, IPTV is coming out for it too.

since when has sony done that. i don't remember there being any special ps2's or ps1's or even psps for that matter. can anyone clear this up because it sounds like bullshit to me

Sony has always brought out enhanced versions of their console hardware. Although some are only made for the JDM market. This goes back to the PSX days.

digital life SUX nowadays consoles are getting outrageous, and the tv's to actually play the games the way they were meant to be played are outraegous its like you can actually enjoy a gaming experience for under 2K
