Sony Japan Reveals New PS2, PSP Models

Officials from Sony Computer Entertainment Japan have revealed a number of new models of the PlayStation 2 and PSP consoles, including new colors and new hardware and software bundles.

Due to be released on July 3rd is a new “cinnabar red” colored PlayStation 2 (SCPH-90000 CR), with matching DualShock 2 controller, which will be released in Japan for a limited time at a recommend retail price of ¥16,000 ($152). Apart from its color, the hardware is otherwise identical to existing versions of the console.

Scheduled for released on July 17th are two new SKUs for the PSP featuring a new “metallic blue” color for the console – which has remained the best selling hardware format in Japan for much of this year.

The PSP Metallic Blue Value Pack will include the console, pouch, hand strap, cloth, 32MB Memory Stick Duo and a D Terminal AV Cable for a price of ¥23,800 ($226). The PSP Metallic Blue 1 Seg Pack will include a “1 Seg” television tuner, a pouch, a viewing stand for the PSP, strap, cloth and a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo for a price of ¥29,800 ($283).

Finally, a PlayStation Eye bundle for the PlayStation 3 will be released on July 24th for ¥5,000 ($48). The pack will contain the PlayStation Eye camera and a copy of new Japanese-only software title Memoushon. The PlayStation Eye was originally launched in Japan in October 25th 2007, alongside collectible card game The Eye of Judgment.

The title will include six casual gamer focused games and utilities, including an image editor, virtual aquarium, two puzzle games and two “Interactive art experiences” which use the camera’s motion detecting abilities.

No indication has been given that any of the bundles will be released outside of Japan.
